I just wanted to state that from this point on HA is going to have a policy of not tolerating extremely long or unnecessarily extravagant or intrusive sigs. The sig feature does not exist to be your personal website within HA, as some people seem to be using it as.

There are a few guidelines that we request be paid heed from this point onward:

- Text in sigs must use small fonts. Use the font controls at the top of the edit area to change this.
- Text in sigs must not be obnoxious or overly colorful (large red or yellow text in a sig for example..). A sig should be unintrusive and exist to provide information if someone is interested enough to pay attention. If your sig draws attention to itself on it's own then it is too intrusive.
- If the length of your sig often exceeds the length of your posts, then that is a good sign that it is too long. Link to a text file or something somewhere if you really feel you must say more.
- As of right now, I have not determined whether or not to entirely disallow images in sigs or not. As long as the above mentioned rules are followed, there won't be a problem, but I'm not sure if people can respect this in regards to images or not. Large colorful banner sigs are not appropriate, though small graphics in the fashion of bullets or icons may be acceptable. WinampDB style images are also probably OK IMO, as long as they are not overly extravagant in nature.

As of right now, I'm giving people a chance to change their sigs on their own before I make the modifications for them (and I will not spend time making them pretty either). We will see how this works out, and whether people can respect this rule or not. I'd rather not have to disable all images and formatting options for sigs, but I will do this if people don't tone things down a little.

Since I obviously cannot check through every members profile, or read every post on this board, I'd like to ask for help from some of the users in keeping tabs on sigs in this sort of ideologically restrictive fashion (rather than implementing a physically restrictive method). If you see someone with an obnoxious sig, please send me a private message about the matter so that I can keep an eye on things. Thanks.

For some reason this topic was on top of my active topic list. I did not go and search for it just to say what I said in the post above, as I thought its gotta be a new topic if its #1 in my active topic list.

Much more trouble will be saved and users who hate thread resurrections will be appeased if the administrators just set threads to be automatically closed after a set number of months.

I mean, in a way, threads that are not closed are just asking for someone to post something new in them, right?

Signatures are pointless anyway - I wonder who first came up with this idea rolleyes.gif , however since I have it turned off in my settings anyway I don't care biggrin.gif

They were probably originated to provide further contact info. and such for the poster... most likely in the early days of Usenet when it was predominantly used by academia and U.S. government (I'm just guessing though).

So, can I have an image as a signature or is it disabled? If it is possible, how to do that (I tried and IMG tag doesn't seem to work), and what are the size restrictions?

and it didn't work.

EDIT: kode54 is fooling me with his mod possibilities, right?

Thatīd mean that every user who has a problem/idea/wants to discuss something would have to start a NEW thread because the old one, although perfectly fitting his needs, is closed already.

Spammers will spam, no matter what you try. Auto-closing threads will only result in more threads.

Well - I would but BB Code doesn't seem to support my sig!
Have a look.
And you cut down the sig size to 150 chars. So there's no way of getting it shorter or smaller.
If I could use more chars it would be no problem to code a small sig.
It would look even better and shorter if I could use it like:

CODE
[size=1]Video: [/size][url=http://www.doom9.org][size=1]Doom9[/size][/URL]

...

but - 150 chars...

I think some good sigs with more related information is good cross referencing and might help to stop people asking the same basics every now and then.
I often look at sigs and find them very useful. Mostly they lead me to interesting information FAQs, Guides or good sites.

Maybe you inrease the sig size so people can code a small sig.
Think of it.

Best regards,
TAS

Why was the sig length reduced from 150 to 64? IMO 150 characters wasn't enough to do any damage (with bb code disabled and all).

I'd love to see full sig capablities restored (make the forums more colorful smile.gif )... and banishment on the spot for obserdly long/obscene sigs. ..but for some reason I doubt that will happen unsure.gif
