Since when is creative labs credible anyways? I know no other PC-technology manufacturer, which has done such incredible things as creative labs. Starting from their drivers-support to hardware-quality to plain out lies. The only thing creative labs is selling today is their name and market-penetration.

I don't see why it is technically impossible to improve audio... we do it with video all the time. I assume it is just that we don't have algorithms advanced enough to do it yet.

I doubt creative does either, though.

Ahh poor 'audiophiles' and gamers (well I'm a gamer myself). I'd like to see them add 'depth', 'warmth', 'crispness', and 'clarity' to the rare 96kbps mp3 files on my computer.

Excellent !  You only forgot the 'advanced settings' panels:

[X] Flash ROM auto-erase on reboot (requires ACPI motherboard support)
[X] Overwrite PCI ID with Joystick Controller data (one-way upgrade !)
[X] Prepare for clean driver upgrade (requires Norton Utilities or a SafeErase® 2.x product)
[X] Enable in-game EAX crashes



Edit: I should mention the new settings that are being added (seen in the recently leaked pre-alpha drivers):

[X] Enable PCI bus compliance (EXPERIMENTAL !)
[X] Fix for random data corruption on AMD/Intel/VIA/SiS/NVIDIA chipsets
[X] PCI voltage tweak 1
[X] PCI voltage tweak 2 (DANGEROUS)
[X] Use correct filter coefficients when resampling audio

I don't know what the voltage tweaks are, but they sound good

I remember someone on the snes9x forums saying that letting his audigy resample to 96000 hz
made game sounds much better than 44100 or 48000.
Someone replied to the post saying the audigy interpolates sound,
going on to say that is why creative says the Audigy Makes Your MP3's sound better®
In other words if a 32khz sound was like this:

I don't know how interpolation works with audio. But after reading this forum that seems like a bunch of hooey.

If audio DACs (digital-analog converters) had no analog lowpass filter, then upsampling and interpolation would help greatly. But all DACs have a lowpass filter.

Well, a 20-bit white noise clip takes 0 kbps and could in theory, be much better than a cd quality clip.. if you're lucky

Is interpolation dithering? No. Interpolation is similar to resampling (or sample rate conversion) without the band limitation. Linear interpolation will not have a positive effect on the sound.

You can learn about what dithering is by reading Nika Aldrich's paper Dither Explained from [a href="http://www.cadenzarecording.com/papers.html]Cadenza Recordings[/url]. It's an excellent paper.

[span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%']I kid, I kid.[/span] I wonder where one gets source audio to create these 'better than CD quality' 96kbps WMA files. Obviously not CDs, must be SACD or DVD Audio. Hell, maybe the recording studio encodes directly to 96kbps WMA and sends it to Microsoft before using it to create the master. Remember kids, quality increases exponentially with overbrightness.
