Recording Problem

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=76331&view=getnewpost

Thanks for the reply mate and the heads up on the correct terminology! I think you've got the gist of my set-up, everything you said made perfect sense, I have tried the balance and the mixer and other audio options offered by the sound card and everything seems to be correct.

Yeah so the problem is not like something loose inside the actual line-in connection but rather the ext. sound card. perhaps something went wrong with the installation or my computer cannot fully support it somehow. My sister seemed to think that wasn't the problem but that was before I had experimented fully with all possibilities, maybe her opinion would be different now. I seen a similar problem from a member here and they solved it by re-installing the sound card or something and using a different PCI slot, now I don't know what a PCI slot is but my computer only has one says my sister, it's a 'Shuttle' and not a fully featured PC, no CD drive and other limitations which is why I had to go down the route of external sound card rather than a soundchip which is exactly what I had before and it was so easy to use and of course took up no extra space and USB slots.

So yeah I'll give my sis the extra info I've gotten through experimenting and yourself and see what I can do, she works with a computer company and it's no problem to get a new sound card to try out, I didn't even pay for this one I have now so it's not as if I'm losing out on anything. Looks like I'll have to get a better, more powerful ext. sound card.

I've just this minute tried my Creative Zen connected to the line-in and it works perfectly, sound from both speakers, which now rules out it being a problem with the line-in connection so I think it's officially the sound card.

Thanks for the help Doug!

Does Koss make good headphones?

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=76314&view=getnewpost

I've never listend to the Porta Pro, but as far as sound quality, it has reputation of being a bargain. I'm guessing that it compares favorably with headphones going for $100 - $150.

Koss has been around for a long time. The Porta Pro has been around for 25 years! They must be doing something right if a 25-year old design is still cosidered one of the best in it's price range. And, it has a lifetime warranty!

Not all Koss headphones have the same reputation for sound quality. Some probably have "average" sound quality in their respective price range. I doubt that "All Koss products suck" unless you are comparing them to $500 headphones. I used to see Koss Pro 4AA* headphones used a lot in radio/tv stations. (I havent been in a radio or TV station for many years.)

In a given price range, open headphones will generally have better sound than closed phones. All of the Grado models (all open back) have a reputation similar to the Porta Pro of being one of the best sounding in every price range. But, as someone noted in your other thread, they look kind-of cheap. I have a pair of Grado SR225's, and they don't look like I paid $200 for them, but they sound nice!

* They keep adding A's... First, it was the Pro 4A, then the Pro 4AA, and now it's the Pro 4AAAT.

Spotify uses Ogg Vorbis (q5)

Disturbingly, one of the people at AVGuide (TAS's website) pointed this one out. Even more disturbingly, the piece seems to be remarkably factual and foo-free.
