How to convert single APE file to MP3?

Hi everyone.

As is clear from the topic description, I am a complete newbie to Foobar2000 and audio programs in general. Hope some very patient forum member can take the time to give me some simple advice

I was given an APE file of a CD but I would like to break it down into the individual tracks, not to burn onto CD but merely to keep on my PC as a playlist and also dowload onto my mp3 player.

After decompressing the file I loaded the cue sheet into Foobar2000, right clicked and selected write APL link files. I then tried converting but every attempt resulted in different errors, including "24 out of 24 tracks converted with major problems". Before even getting to this stage, I had to try and find and download foo_clienc.dll and lame.exe (with much difficulty; the sites everyone referred to are apparently no longer functional), and it seems that the foo_clienc.dll driver I eventually found is incomplete or for an old version of foobar2000.

Could someone possibly give me some easy, step-by-step instructions on how to go about converting a single APE file to mp3, while separating the individual tracks?

Many thanks,

Florio

Step 1. Did you install the monkey's audio decoding component from the optional component page?

Step 2. Get rid of foo_clienc.dll. the default install package has included a Converter since forever ago.

Step 3. Drag your cue sheet to a playlist and select all the entries and right-click and select Convert...

Step 4. Once you launch the converter dialog, select MP3 as the Output format from the Output format drop down. You can click the [...] button to change the quality if you wish. If you can't find mp3 listed there you need to click the more settings button at the bottom of the dialog and add the path to lame.exe in the "Command line encoder folders" box.

Step 5. Under output files select "Convert each track to an individual file". Specify the naming pattern you want in the Name format box below. The Preview box on the right will show you a preview of the resulting track names.

Step 6. Set whatever you want in the other two tabs.

Step 7. Press OK.

hi Florio & welcome to the forums.

for start & if you havent already, you will need the APE file codec foo_monkey (if i recall correctly) so that foobar can read correctly.
this can be found on the download page on the main site.

you say you "After "decompressing" the file..." what did you decompress? did you convert the APE to WAV? if that is the case you will need to edit the cuesheet & correct it to point at the WAV file rather than the APE file as that would be the main reason for your errors. but if you have the APE codec you wont need to manually decompress the file as foobar will read & seperate no problem.

as for conversion, load the cuesheet into foobar, highlight all the tracks, right click>convert>... this will bring the conversion page up. ignore the "Processing" & "Other" tabs as you wont be needing them so stay on the "Output" tab. select your Output Format from the drop down, id imagine this is pretty self explanatory, you can also add your own Output Format if you wish but whats there should be sufficient.
select your Output Path, i always have this as Source so they convert to the folder they live in.
ok, now the important bit for you, in Output Files make sure "Convert Each Track To An Individual File", this will as it says & as you requested convert the APE file to individual output files as specified by the cuesheet.

click ok & all should be good.

hope this helps, i think you'll find with foobar that there is alot to get your head around on 1st starting with it but once you get your head around it, it is a very powerful player & audio tool.
anymore problems dont hesitate to ask

Well, I've followed all of your instructions to the letter, but still no luck I'm afraid.

I continue to get a converter status report telling me that "24 out of 24 tracks converted with major problems." Further details are also given in the report, but in each case, "Unable to open source file: Object not found.  Conversion failed: Object not found".

I believe that the person who gave me the APE file had downloaded it from Rapidshare or somewhere similar (I'll have to ask) and that it was originally divided into several RAR files. But I don't have these, only the unzipped or merged (or whatever you'd call it!) file.

Any suggestions?

Florio

Please post the contents of the cue file. Perhaps we'll see something odd that we can fix.
That's so plausible, I can't believe it.

Yes, the file will play, but the cue sheet won't play it.

The contents of the cue sheet are as follows:

Thanks very much, Shakey_Snake. Your diagnosis was spot on; I hadn't noticed the WAV. Now I can convert and open the individual tracks, even if there seem to be a few problems opening/converting a couple of them. If I can't solve this, I'll get back to you...
