loud static

if i'm playing music... its usually fine...  but if i do anything on that machine, or if i have a filesharing program open that has files on that computer shared, i get occasional LOUD static...

Its a p2 450, 208mb ram, 100mhz FSB... Kernel Streaming on M-Audio Sonica, and it does NOTHING but play my music...

but if i try and unzip a file from that machine over the network, or even sometimes just while things are uploading/downloading over the network, it happens...

theres plenty of free ram, and watching task manager, when it happens the cpu usage is only at like 50 or 60%... its not like its pushing 99% and the computer just can't Handle doing 2 things at once...

use directsound instead of kernel streaming

does your CD Drive -> SoundCard caple plugged in? Remove it - on all my systems plugging CDin cable + enabling CDin/WAVEin in mixer results in static-like sounds (but not too loud anyway, and high frequencies mostly).

BTW, does your computer's case ground'ed properly? What about DMA usage on IDE channels? If u use Via chipset - try installing latest 4in1 SP.

i'd prefer to avoid direct sound if possible...

no, theres no cd drive in the case...

and its not like static OVER the music... its like the music cuts out and the soundcard just throws garbage at my reciever for a second or 2...

not using VIA

the case is a dell case, so i'm assuming the ground is fine...  i think this is more a software problem...

all the drives use Ultra DMA...  theres 1 drive on each of the motherboard's ide controllers, then an ata-133 (highpoint rocket 133sb) controller with my 2 bigger drives...

any valid reasons for that ? (and please, no BS about "bypassing kernel mixer improving sound quality" unless you have scientific proofs that you can hear the difference other than volume)

i like to output bit-perfect lossless files to my denon reciever... so i figure i'll just let that handle the (de)amplification +/- 89db instead of the Kmixer adjusting the volume before it gets there...

i just changed my filesharing program to share off another computer instead... that fixed some of it... but basically anytime something accesses the hardrive while music is playing it chokes...  the hardrive is ata-133 with a highpoint rocket 133sb controller card...  if that matters...

will messing with the "thread priority" under playback help any?  buffering files to memory didn't seem to do anything... (actually, it would get staticy for just a sec when the file starts to play)

It still could be EMI coming from the controller or from one of the drives.  Since it sounds like a non-standard Dell set-up, a cable could be loose or a connector not properly seated.

First I'd try to isolate it to a partiucular drive by moving the sound file around and see if the static persists.

Then I'd try moving the disk controller to another slot as far away from the sound controller as possible.  For good measure it might be a good idea to clean the contacts on both connectors as well and reseat any cards connectors, etc. in the system.

Good luck.  These things can be a pain to find.

Also...Have you tried increasing the KS buffer length ?

it does it with any file on any hard drive (or over the network)...    so i'm pretty much shooting down the idea of it being an EMI... its definately a buffer issue...

upping the KS buffer length helps... but i have to max the buffer (10k ms) for it to make a real difference and then pressing pause is delayed 10,000 ms (because for whatever reason, my pause button has the latency of my buffer)

i guess if i could figure out why pausing my music has a delay, that would pretty much solve this for me...  anyone wanna take a stab at that?

some people just keep using experimental features for no apparent reason (warm fuzzy feelings etc), then whine about problems they get because of their shitty drivers.
you have been suggested a solution for your problem at least twice in this thread, if you can't be f#cked to even try it, go somewhere else.
