stream-recording, with what and how? Options

I'm curious, what software do you use if you want to save audio stream and how you do it?
I use total recorder, it's good but maybe there is some free alternative, or not free but better?

I use Jasper's "LineIn" and "File Writer" Winamp plugins.

Well for me it depends on the stream.

For shoutcast, I use foobar2000 and the modified http reader component. Other possibilities are Streamripper or Stationripper.
For Real or Windows media streams (using RTSP, PNM or MMS protocols), I use Net Transport.

Actually I don't record the sound (through the sound card) but try to download the stream from the server when it is possible.

Some good advice from nyarlathotep. I also try to directly capture the encoded packets instead of decoding the stream.

The modified HTTP reader with stream saving can be downloaded here.

For Windows Media streams, I've also succesfully used ASFRecorder in the past.

For Real Audio/Media streams there's an older version of the Streambox VCR that can download and save the files when you find the name of the source. I believe due to copyright reasons or something like that the newer versions do not have the possibility.

This is what Streamripper and RadioRipper already do. They record the stream before passing it to your soundcard, so no re-encoding losses.
You should be aware that some broadcasters take a dim view of this and you may find yourself kicked if they detect you.

The alternative is an output recorder, of which there are dozens, EAC, Feurio, CDex(I think) TR, X-Ripper, Wave Repair etc. These are obviously undetectable.

In fairness to the very small operators you should ensure that any streamripping program you use does not establish a second connection and use up precious bandwidth.

Both streamripper and radioripper can rebroadcast the stream to you can listen to the restream while recording without adding more load to the station.

advantages:
Streamripper
1) multiple OS
2) runs off command line, and you can specify how long to record, so you can start it with a scheduling program to record while you aren't home.
3) free

Radioripper:
1) GUI: select the station you want off the list, then hit buttons for listen, record, rebroadcast.
2) can rebroadcast up to 7 copies of the stream in case you want to wander about the house, or others on your local network want to listen.

Timer functions are on Radioripper's list of coming attractions.

Both: record the original encoding, not a decoded wav or transcode.
I believe both can split the stream into separate song files if the stream has the right tag support. None of the stations/shows I record do that.

Just discovered a cool no-bloat freeware app called Screamer Radio.  Worth a look.

Looks cool to me;
Direct saving of mp3 and ogg vorbis streams. Doesn't open a second listening connection while recording (I checked against my own stream). Saves individual tracks with artist & title for filename; at least it does with the Icecast2 ogg vorbis stream I'm trying out now, this stream sends a full set of tags along with the stream, though (it saves the tags, too). And not limited to Shoutcast servers like some of the tools mentioned. There's also a predefined preset list, for other stations you enter the URL.

Minor drawbacks;
It doesn't seem to understand m3u or PLS playlists. There's only limited display of metadata. Ogg, mp3 and wma streams are supported, but not aac. Can't see that you can enter your own presets.

Sorry. You can indeed enter your own presets or favorites through XML files, using the following syntax:

Well there is the excellent RadioLover but that only works with mp3 streams. iRecordMusic works with other streams but it does transcode. I find it works pretty well however YMMV

Don't know but if it's legal to have this older version at for example Rarewares, I have it.

I've best ex[erience using OfflineExplorer for downloading streams directly. MMS,RTPS,etc.

It's really a leecher for downloading whole sites, but the stream ripping functions work perfectly.

ASFrecorder for example doesnt work on all streams, and on some streams it manages to download the file but somehow mess it a bit up so when you watch it, it is choppy and stalls.

I use HiDownlaod for any real or windows media streams audio and video it also comes with a link to some app which monitors sites and gives u the url to streams if u cant find them yourself as they are quite often hidden (havent yet used this extra but sounds good)

For those instances when direct ripping is impossible, and you'll have to resort to recording from soundcard (which have been dicussed earlier in this thread should be avoided if possible), I find that HardiskOgg are a nice free program (Ogg, mp3, Monkeys Audio). LiveInCode are another one (bit more primitive, but offers Speex in addition to Ogg). I've had this issue with some real streams and such, that I could not rip them and had to resort to simple recording....
