iTunes 6 released

Five weeks after the launch of iTunes 5, here's iTunes 6!

Quote
- Here are the big changes: firstly, 'gifting' - you can buy music for other people, who get an email telling them to download. Next: customer reviews - Amazon-style peer reviews of music. Third: Just For You (beta) - a recommendation service, again similar to what Amazon offers.

- and finally for iTunes... music videos. Currently there are 2000 available to buy. But they're gonna cost $1.99. And Pixar are offering 6 short films, also for $1.99. The price seems a bit high, and didn't get a cheer from the audience. The videos take the space of six songs (so about 20MB) and have the same rights management as music tracks.

iTunes 6 will be available today for free download.

You'll also be able to buy TV shows apparently.. No words on new application features yet.

So it's just marketing mumbo-jumbo thus far that justifies a major jump in version number ?

Poor ...
The name was Plex The Ripper, not Jack The Ripper

Video iPods too.

I'm stunned ... it took almost 2 Years from  4.1, 4.2, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.9, to reach 5 und then suddenly 6.0.
BTW: somebody interested in older Windows versions?

... and for the record ... still no gapless-encoding with AAC ... this must be purpose.

Wonder if they are capable of playing LAME VBR without stuttering...

Without knowing what was done internally, you can't really judge based on external appearances. It could be well worth a major revision, and have no new functionality at all.

It could also just be that
  • They had a long-running dev team working on video support that was not tied to any particular release cycle
  • They finished in between planned major releases (or all the legalwork was straightened out)
  • Video support is too major a feature to just be a .1 release so it had to be a major release

Which is quite reasonable to expect IMHO.

Well, there's a new Videos option in the source list. It seems to put any video files you have in the iTunes library into this space.

The new Video space also includes any Video podcasts you have downloaded, BTW. Try the "Diggnation (Videos)" podcast for an example of this.

This weeks "free downloads" in the Music Store are not showing up as free, they show up as $0.99. Could be a bug in the Music Store itself though.

You can buy episodes of TV shows. They have Lost, Desperate Housewives, Night Stalker, The Suite Life, and That's So Raven up there right now. Also 6 shorts by Pixar. As was stated, all these are $1.99 a pop.

The Music Videos section doesn't appear to have been changed yet, they're still view online only, no downloading and keeping. But they're still free too.

Beyond that I don't see anything obviously new.

The whole iPod/iTunes machine has become too media-centric for my tastes. And the new iPod looks like another marketing move, i bet its still the same innards, albeit with video support.

Since the whole form factor has changed quite a bit I very much doubt this is just a firmware update.

Or previous iPods contained a lot of extra air they just left out this time

Has someone checked whether they actually changed anything soundwise in Qt7.0.3? Or is it just video-enhancements (and probably some video related DRM)?

I reckon you could encode a track in 'VBR' and 'CBR', then upgrade to iTunes 6 and Quicktime 7.0.3 and encode the same track in 'VBR' and 'CBR' again. If the files are not bit-identical before and after upgrade then something about the encoding must have changed. For instance, they might have done some extra tuning regarding the VBR since that was only just introduced.

[span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%']Or is there an element of chance in every encoding making even files encoded in exact same environments not bit-identical?[/span]

We'll see, but iLounge is reporting they've gone for the Shuffles signiture, which many felt had a better bass response than the iPods and minis.

I love itunes and everytime I have almost convinced myself to get an ipod, apple drops the nano on me. Hmmm, should I get that? Boom, here come the vPod, hmm should I get that. Dang, I'll never get an ipod. I'll just keep waiting another month for something better. Then hold off another month or so for something better, then hold off another month.....

It's a vicious cycle.

I hear you.  I got a 1 GB Shuffle about a year ago because I wanted a portable that could play my iTunes Music Store files and my own ripped AAC files, but I also really wanted it to be flash-based.  And now there's the Nano.  I'm still very happy with my Shuffle though.

It's only baseline H.264. ALL advanced  features like B-frames, CABAC, multi ref are disable.

Heh, when I read the subject I thought it was a joke.  But no...  Weird how they jumped up an entire version just like that.  They should have just waited and released 5.0 now instead of releasing 5.0 then 6.0.  Eh, who cares, I love the software so I really don't care what version it is, LOL.

Not in a million years...

A "free" codec that outperforms AAC at low bitrates? Gapless? ReplayGain? From a company that sells its own variant of AAC?

Never.
I'm the one in the picture, sitting on a giant cabbage in Mexico, circa 1978.
