Well, I put in a CD only once for ripping. So why keep the CD track data on your local machine at all? That's correct. Modern drives under WinXP are lousy CD players, most of them don't even have headphone amp anymore. It's best to rip the CD and play it back from HDD which is spinning anyway all the time. Huh? Under Windows XP (and probably 2K), CD playing is done digitally, not through the analog output on the drive. |

Digital playback is the same ripping, only done repeatedly - when it can be performed properly only once. Under Winxp the CD drive thinks for (relatively) long periods of time when instructed to start playback or skip to a different track. Under Windows 98, no matter if CDex or CDPlayer used seeking was fast, comparable to a dedicated rackmount CD player.

Well, I put in a CD only once for ripping. So why keep the CD track data on your local machine at all? Because, in the future, you can have again need of ripping the CD exploiting new versions of the various encoder, or simply changing audio format. It surprises that developer Lame to ask it... CD-Text reader don't work on Vista... |

And neigher would I want to have my registry filled with useless crap (chances are my OS would be reinstalled if I ever wanted to rerip anyway). Also I think the lyric and tagging options should only be part of a ripper, if it's a full featured tagger too. The program interface are silly and doesn't have a professional look. I'm still not convinced about this ripper. Oviri, you have a large potential user base here at HA, but until now it doesn't seem you are taking all the constructive feedback serious. I really don't get the point of it... This post has been edited by odyssey: Oct 28 2007, 22:48 -------------------- Can't wait for a HD-AAC encoder :P

Who's Afraid of Registry? from blogs.msdn.com QUOTE Use the following best practices when dealing with the Windows registry. * Use of registry reduces application portability. Therefore, use only if required. * Don’t use the registry as a configuration trash–bin. * Don’t store secrets in registry. * Encrypt application data stored in the registry. * Discourage users from directly editing the registry. * Perform input validation on data read and written to registry. * Don’t write data to HKLM. Reading back the data will require the user to be logged on as administrator as by default only Read-access is provided to HKLM all users. * Don't open registry keys for FULL_CONTROL or ALL_ACCESS. from codinghorror.com/blog/ QUOTE But after living with the Windows Registry for more than a decade, I'm starting to wonder if we were better off with those .INI files. ... The real problem with the registry is that it was exposed to the outside world. Instead of being a secure, central hive for only the most essential and global settings, over time the registry has slowly become a trash heap of miscellaneous junk settings for every rinky-dink application on the planet. I *recommend* you that if you truly are interested on people using your application, (and if not, why are you posting about it?), to start listening to requests. Kwanbis, you don't understand. Sure, most people shouldn't use the registry since they can't program very well and will just mess things up. But Dr. Oviri is a programming genius and there's no way his program will mess things up in the registry. Portability isn't really a problem because real world users don't actually use more than one computer -- don't worry it's a common misperception. hmm well perhaps it's a good application but it does not work on my computer and I have run just about all the apps I have tried so far. I had eac running, cdex and a few more. I mentioned this app does not run on my windows vista system. I realise many apps wont work on vista so oh well... so much for genius. |

Two words: "Registry fragmentation".
Not being able to save the registry due to it being full is mighty fun. -------------------- Zao shang yong zao nong zao rang zao ren zao.

If someone was going to go to the effort to re rip a CD, they would also take the extra few seconds to import the track data again from scratch... said a different way, If I was creating a new rip for what ever reason I would, I would want everything to be re ripped, including the audio data especially if I was using freeDB because then maybe over time someone had fixed a few typos. |

Also this is true, but in freedb the lyrics not available I prefer always to have all the available data and rip my CD in any moment This post has been edited by Dr. Oviri: Nov 1 2007, 22:41 |
