Audigy 2 on a P166MMX?

I have a spare Audigy 2 soundcard and also an old spare P166MMX box. I was thinking of putting the Audigy 2 in there and basically using it as a light use MP3 player/net surfing box for a second room. Is the P166 going to be enough for it?

I was under the impression that because basically a soundcard is an off-board hardware sound processor, the CPU speed shouldn't really be an issue. But I noticed on www.soundblaster.com they recommend a minimum of a 500MHZ CPU or something like that.

Has anybody tried an Audigy or Audigy 2 on a low spec PC? Will it work but with some functions (DVD-Audio? 7.1?) unavailable?

Tnx for any info,
-dave

I think that min. system requirements applies to their bundled software only.

Weird. Myself I'd assume that a soundcard doesn't require much CPU power at all. Maybe that sysreq could apply to that 1024 channel software synthesizer.

I guess I'll just give it a try and hope for the best!

Don't do it! It'll decrease the value of your P166 box! Audigy has that effect on everything it touches.

I think that is both for the 1K channel soft-synth and - especially - for the Dolby Digital decoding done at driver level.

Bye!
