In a PC, how exactly is the digital signal routed from a HD or CD/DVD drive to the sound card (specifically, I mean: I2S, EIAJ, etc. as well as all the hardware encountered en route (buffers, memory, CPU, etc.))?

Its loaded over ATA to the system's RAM, processed by the CPU into usable PCM audio, and then DMA'ed to sound card's output buffer over some kind of chipset interconnect and then a PCI bus.

If you want to know more, get out the manual for whatever motherboard or chipset you're using and see exactly which buses are present on it. The specific interconnects depend on the chipset used.

You are not asking for a post, you are asking for a thesis project!
