Is it safe to spin up drive before extraction, with a Plextor Premium? Options

I had an odd setup once which required the drive to spin up before the extraction began. Else the ripping process would start before the disc was ready, and the first 5 seconds or so of each record ripped would be muted.
I don't know what was wrong, but I think it was a combination of an old drive, a slow computer and bad configuration of the ripping software ...

Okay. That is a better way to ask my question. I phrased it poorly. I guess what I meant is, will it result in data loss to spin up a Plextor Premium before extraction? And what about not allowing it to reduce its speed during extraction?

Older drives (build earlier than 1997 where DAE capability was luxury) need the extra spinup because they tend to read false data during the initial spinup phase.

Modern drives do not need it anymore ... but it doesn't cause harm either.

First question: No, you will not lose data if you set your drive to spin up. As JeanLuc said, if you have an older drive, you might have to set it to spin up in order to get correct results.
Second question: If you don't allow the drive to spin down, you might get more errors since the drive usually has to slow down the rotation (=> read) speed in order to correct errors.

But EAC will detect and report those errors, correct?

Yep.

I have EAC set to spin-up first, no harm in it, in theory it should reduce any errors, plus seems to rip faster once it starts reading that way anyway.

Right. That is exactly why I wondered about enabling this option. My drive seems to start out very slow on some very clean CDs, but I wasn't sure why.
