[TOS #8] From: iTunes MP3 Encoder

While joint stereo is lossless and awesome, this is true only for LAME in case of mp3. There is probably a good reason why the iTunes disables joint stereo at high bitrates by default. Some old FhG encoders have nasty flanging with joint stereo and something like that, if maybe a lot less severe, might be happening with iTunes. It was in 2004, but it didn't end the listening tests as being worse than Xing for nothing (not that this is damning, as Xing was proven to be quite OK compared to the awful reputation it had).
