I bought a (rare) CD off eBay. Item description says CD in fair condition, which is very vague (cause I checked the sellers other listings and he says that for every CD). I then read the seller's feedback (that buyers left for him/her), which was around 99% positive, and based on that, it seems that the CDs he/she sells are in bad condition...so I took a chance in buying this $2 (+ $2 shipping) CD...

Well, based on the physical appearance, lot of scratches, and then there's this one spot where the CD is practically see-through (though very small 'dots'). I instantly thought, crap, I just wasted $4. But I decided to let EAC go to work...

First 75% of the CD ripped with no errors and gave me 99%+ qualities.

Then it started. Speed dropped to 0.1x and EAC was having trouble reading the CD. I started it late last night (about 2 in the morning) and was about to go to sleep, so I just let it run overnight. I got up @ about 3:30 and it was still running! So I woke up today, check the log file, and see all these suspicious positions and decided to audition these suspicious positions, eagerly waiting to hear how messed up the rip sounds.

Needless to say, the CD sounded PERFECT! I checked every single suspicious position and did not hear anything abnormal. The parts of the CD that were transparent, I know EAC couldn't have extracted data from it (as that would be magic), but I guess these spots were small enough so that I could not tell (as I have 'fill missing samples with silence'). This is a rap CD (stop laughing), so I really don't care if there's rip errors and none are discernable by my ear.

Just thought I'd show some EAC love

Check the log below. Notice that track 15 has a suspicious position spanning 0:00 to 1:41. Guess how long the track is??? 1:42! Track sounds perfect!

My recent EAC success story was a CD I bought from a second hand store for 50 cents. It is a very old CD from 1987.

The CD was scratched so badly that it wasn't shiny, you know how CDs normally reflect so you can see yourself in them. Well this CD was scratched so badly that it had a matte finish!

However, I put it in my LG4167 drive to see what EAC could do, it ripped the entire CD slowly (about 3X average) but got a perfect rip of every track first go.

Wow, now that's OLD!!

I think it is the oldest CD I own. Obviously I own a lot of older music, but the CDs are normally much newer.

It is a very strange sounding CD. The funny thing is a week later I was at a music fair and found the same album on vinyl for $1, so I bought that just to compare, and I must say the vinyl version sounds a lot better.

I don't know what they were doing to CDs back then, but it wasn't all good. However, the album has been remastered and apparently (I don't own the remaster) they have just compressed it heaps.

EAC usually works well for me too, but it did let me down once with a CD (Radiohead / The Bends) that didn't look so bad at all, there was just one medium scratch. However, after I let EAC work on it for about 6 hours (note that there were only two problematic songs), the rip was finished and one track had a second of silence in the middle. Well, I gave up and filled the gap from a downloaded mp3.

Well, from scrached cds, EAC works better for me in burst mode.
However sumone, if I were you, I would have encoded lossless a dying cd like that. You struggled many hours to rip it, isn't it?

First time I see someone impressed by EAC taking a complete night
to extract (probably incorrectly) a few tracks. And even more, you
were apparently so impressed that you didn't bother trying another
tool or another extraction method smile.gif

QUOTE (sumone @ Jun 28 2006, 23:32) *
The parts of the CD that were transparent, I know EAC couldn't have extracted
data from it (as that would be magic), but I guess these spots were small enough
so that I could not tell (as I have 'fill missing samples with silence').

A normal drive can recover missing data from a 1mm hole in a disc.
It's not magic, just maths, and it does not depend on which ripping
tool you use.

I was gonna say something smart back Spath, but in the end, why choose another way when the first route gets you there?

Based on your previous posts, it's obvious you're a techie & know your stuff, but us laymans love having a false sense of pride in a particular software program.

Out of curiousity, how can a drive recover data from a 1mm hole? Will it actually recover data verbatim or will it be an estimate?

It will recover exactly the original bits. The theoretical size of a defect which can be
completely corrected is 2.4mm, but due to various lenghtening effects, 1mm is a
more realistic value. This is possible thanks to the error correction and detection
mechanism of CDs, the CIRC (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIRC).
