Is there any way, using the formatting tags/ language to find out if a song has artwork or not? I am trying to make sure that all of my music has an album cover, but I don't want to go through album by album checking.

it's not possible with title formatting.
but you can add a facets panel to your layout and group by album. this can display your whole library with thumbnails of artwork. you can then see at a glance what is missing. |

Mp3Tag can help with finding all songs that are missing album art. From http://help.mp3tag.de/main_filter.html:
CODE %_covers% IS "" Will return all files that are missing cover art. |
