Are DVI-HDMI adapters bidirectional?

I was wondering about something... My video card came shipped with a DVI to HDMI adapter that can also transport sound. Any idea if such an adapter can be used the other way round, that is, to connect a PC display to a device that has an HDMI output?

Yes this should work.

Two potential issues:

1.  Most PC displays aren't expecting sound over DVI even if they have speakers.

2.  Some PC displays won't sync to very low resolutions like 480i from a DVD player.
