...for recording records into digital format in a controlled environment. Sound quality is priority #1, skip protection less important. Looking to spend about $100 (for one) and would love to spend less if possible for something that would be comparable but perhaps not "the best".

A frequent recommendation around here is the Shure M97xe, which can be had for around $80 from a number of places online - for instance, LP Gear, which is where I bought mine from.
Mounted on an old Pioneer PL-4 direct-drive turntable and feeding an Audio-Technica AT-PEQ3 preamp, it sounds very nice - well, as nice as a given piece of vinyl can sound.

It's more expensive than what you want to spend (~$150) but the Audio Technica AT440MLa is the most commonly recommended cartridge for the job you propose. It's something to do with the shape of the stylus and how it fits deeper in the groove as well as the overall quality of AT cartridges in general.
I've got one myself and it gives excellent results although I cannot claim it's a quantum leap better than anything a bit less expensive e.g. AT120 or AT95. |
