xmms plugin system requirements

Do I need anything special for this plugin to work? I just put the .so file to Input directory and that should be all?

I'm asking this because I just installed linux on an old pentium and when I try to play mpc or save changes after changing the mpc options I get "illegal operation" and xmms is killed.
Is the plugin for i686 and above only?

And compiling the source gave me just a bunch of errors.
