does anyone use aac on linux?

which encoder?
...decoder?
...[xmms] plugin?

which license is used in the different aac encoders?
is there an freeware, gpl, bsd... licensed aac encoder?

I never got any AAC decoder working on Linux, so I gave up.

hm,

sounds not good. is the sound quality much more better than mpc at bitrates 180 - 260 kbs?

Yes. FAAC.
www.audiocoding.com

Quality isn't on par with Psytel AACenc, though.

You can find FAAD (open-source decoder) at audiocoding too.

Roberto.

@Garf:
I don't know much about linux, but seems someone found out why FAAD doesn't compiles well on it:

Both are transparent on most cases at these bitrates.

This is correct, but what Roberto is avoiding to say here, is that MPC is the leader of the pack at these bitrates. :listen:

Also, I wouldn't recommend using FAAC for serious encoding.  The quality usually isn't even as good as LAME.

MPC is your best bet for high quality (moderate bitrate) encoding on Linux.

Btw, you could probably get PsyTEL AAC to work via Wine though I haven't tried it myself.

You should really put an IMO somewhere there, Nika.

It's a proven fact, IMO.  And my name's not Nika.

FAAC is not usable for archiving. Quality was always below Lame MP3
quality. Some samples were also not transparent at 512 kbps,
where Lame worked well with ca. 240 kbps.

FAAD works well.

The only way to encode AAC under Linux is Wine+Psytel AAC.
But there are also a lot of improvements possible with Psytel AAC
at bitrates around 128 kbps. Encoding with 192 kbps should be secure
for most samples.

The problem has got nothing to do with libc. The problem is that whoever put the source package together was so clueless as to be a mistake of the Gods to be born. I recommend that this person be battered to death and run over a few times, or the hands cut off, or if neither is possible, (s)he is put in a mental institute and not allowed to within 500 metres of anything that could be programmable anymore again.

And now I'm being nice, even.
