Help with Lame presets/settings pls!!

Hi folks...I'm a newbie here so pls forgive me for asking what is probably a very FAQ!

All these Lame switches are pretty confusing for a newbie like me used to Audiograbber...I'd like some recommendations for switches (presets or otherwise) to use with Lame 3.9. Aplha7

I need switches for:

1. The highest quality settings for archival/studio use
2. High quality use on my portable MP3 players (Rio Volt SP100 and Creative Jukebox)

I'm not too bothered about file size. My music is a mix of all sorts: rock, ambient/chillout, motown, R&B. Tend to play more of the chillout stuff.

Thanks for ur help.

Hi,

All you need to do is download this compile:

http://static.hydrogenaudio.org/extra/lame_dm_rev8a-ICL.zip

And use one of the following presets:

--alt-preset standard (you can specify "fast standard" instead for a slightly faster and just a tad lower quality version)

--alt-preset extreme (higher bitrate than standard, also has a "fast" mode)

--alt-preset insane (even higher bitrate/quality, no "fast" mode)

You should be fine with --alt-preset standard.

If you want a good line for your portable maybe you should try an abr mode.  Just specify:

--alt-preset <bitrate> (where <bitrate> = the bitrate you want the file to come out to).

Hope that helps.

Thanx very much for ur help. Are these settings all VBR types? I shud have made myself clear that I prefer VBR.

Cheers!

"standard" and "extreme" are VBR.  "insane" is 320kbps CBR.  The others are ABR.

Hi, is --alt-preset 134 (for example) better (about quality) than ff123-Heijden's setting?
(--abr 134 -h --nspsytune --athtype 2 --lowpass 17.5
--ns-bass 6 --scale 0.93): http://ff123.net/cbr128.html

Thanks.

Bye, dB

Hi. I d/l'd the above compile and tried it with --alt -preset 132 using the latest razorlame and got the following error

Command: C:WINDOWSDesktopDownloadslame-20011127lame.exe --alt-preset 132 "C:My DocumentsDVDGlenn Frey - Solo Collectionpark_44k-16.wav" "C:My DocumentsJogging Wavespark_44k-16.mp3"

    <infile> and/or <outfile> can be "-", which means stdin/stdout.
Try:

or:
    "C:WINDOWSDesktopDownloadslame-20011127lame.exe --longhelp"
or "C:WINDOWSDesktopDownloadslame-20011127lame.exe -?"              for a complete options list
RazorLame encountered an unknown message from LAME while trying to encode "C:My DocumentsDVDGlenn Frey - Solo Collectionpark_44k-16.wav"!

Encoded 0 files in 0:00:00
There was an unexpected LAME message for one file, please check log for error messages.

In the past it has not been unusual to get the odd error with new compiles and razorlame, but this is the first time I have seen it choke totally.

Am I doing something newbish?

Hrmm.. not sure why you'd be having problems, I just tried that command line with the latest razorlame and everything is working fine.

Are you sure you were using the correct compile?  If you used --alt-preset and it said "unrec option" it must have been an outdated compile.  Looking at the compile date (nov 27) would support that also.

Looking at the date on that compile and the help message (note the dm instead of alt), Razorlame must be pointing to the wrong .exe still.
