Columns UI: Filter question

Is there any code i can use to ignore "The " in an artist name?

I know of $swapprefix and $stripprefix, but I want to keep the "The" there and have it ignored when sorting.

I know its possible as I've seen screenshots where it was ignored.

Thanks for any help.
