PlusV software has been released under GPL license

Sourcecode for PlusV software has been available since december, but the license issue has been unclear.

Source has been released under GNU License (GPL) and can also be used in closed-software products with free license from developer company VLSI Solution.

I haven't got the time to do a full check of the licensing issues right now, but I have a question: Is PlusV usable in BSD licensed software?

Since PlusV is now in GPL, it doesn't seem possible unless they change license. See Gabriel Bouvigne's comment on:
http://www.plusv.org/modules.php?op=modloa...ic=20&forum=5&0

(I don't know much about GPL, is it possible to use GPL software in BSD software?)

If they don't change license, it probably would be possible with separate free license from developer company

It is not possible to use GPL code in BSD-licensed code; it is however possible to do the other way around (use BSD-licensed code in GPL code).  This is because the GPL is more restrictive than the BSD license, so including BSD-licensed code in a GPL app does not violate the BSD license - you're only adding additional restrictions, which the BSD license does not prohibit.  But to include GPL code in BSD-licensed code, you'd have to remove restrictions, which the GPL does not permit.

What's the word on PlusV? I've never heard of it before this posting. Is it worth using?

Thanks!!

PlusV is kind of add-on to mp3's, with it you can encode mp3's with SBR (Spectral Band Replication) technology (like what MP3PRO uses). MP3's encoded with SBR generally sound better on lower bitrates (96kb and smaller) than mp3's encoded without SBR.
This makes it very interesting technology for streaming and mobile mp3-players.

At present state PlusV isn't worth using unless you are audio coder or are very interested on audio compression technology and like to experiment with half-finished technologies.

For more thorough info, check http://www.plusv.org/intro-mp3plusv.php

For a taste of what plusv sounds like compared to other low-bitrate formats, visit:

http://ff123.net/samples.html

At the bottom of the page, I have placed four temporary mp3 files, which are transcodes (using --alt-preset insane) of various formats, including plusv.  This uses Monty's demo file, comp.wav.

Note that I cheated with plusv, and downsampled to 32 kHz before encoding; it sounds better to me that way.
