Histogram characters in LAME?

I feel like I should be able to figure this out, but for some reason I can't either figure it out or find info on it anywhere.  Why are there two different chars ('%' and '*') in the LAME encoding histogram, and what do they mean?

I believe it has to do with what parts of the MP3 use MS and which parts don't.
Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.

% stands for Stereo frames, * for Joint Stereo frames.
