WAP/GPRS

no, im not asking a wierd question.. do you know what WAP/GPRS is? i wrote a quite little plugin for winamp3 that allows you to control it via WAP/GPRS... i was wondering if there are many people who know what it is/use it in the foobar comunity to make it worth my while to port it to fooabr..

(WAP/GPRS is mobile internet for non-tech minded)

I really see no interest in using a WAP/GPRS technology to control foobar...
Why ? Because it's :
- non-free
- really slow
- dependant of the reception of the area...

I've studied it long enough but I really think it's not interesting for this use... (I'm not even using it for anything else either but I think some people might be interested for the other applications...)

Theres's much better wireless solutions like :
- IR remote control
- Bluetooth
- WiFi

I don't know preciselly about security issues in WAP/GPRS... but this isn't a problem in the 3 samples I gave because it's only local connections...

But it's just my opinion ;-) If you still find it interesting...

The poll should have 2 propositions instead of the 1rst one :
-> Yes, and i use it AND I'm interested in using it with foobar2000
-> Yes, and i use it BUT I'm not interested in using it with foobar2000

WAP and GPRS are generaly free in the UK now, and WAP may be slowish but GPRS is much faster and much more reliable.. and it wouldnt be for general use, it would be for remote shout/ice cast control, or things like that...

ill give it a few more days before i decide if ill port it or not

Wireless application protocol (WAP) is a protocol that has successfully established a de facto standard for the way in which wireless technology is used for Internet access. WAP technology has been optimized for information delivery to thin-client devices, such as mobile phones.

With General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) you can enjoy a continuous wireless connection to data networks and access your favorite information and entertainment services. GPRS technology allows mobile phones to be used for sending and receiving data over an Internet Protocol (IP)-based network. GPRS as such is a data bearer that enables wireless access to data networks like the Internet. The applications using GPRS are WAP, MMS, SMS, Java and the PC dial-up (for example, Internet and e-mail).

Here, in Israel, it's almost free to use the wap over gprs (10NIS per month, that is about 2.3 USD), so I have it enabled, of course, and this'd be very interesting to have such a plugin...

I still don't understand neither can I imagine, how you can control foobar2000 with this. What kind of receiver do you use? Could someone please explain?

upNorth> I think you just have to create a WAP/GPRS service on your computer...
Then you can access it from your mobile if your PC is connected to Internet.
Here's the way your request will go :

Mobile Phone => Phone Network => Phone / Internet Bridge => Internet Network => User Computer

If your computer has protections (Firewalls) or if it is behind a NAT server for Internet connection sharing, I don't know if this wil still work...

Have you tried gprs-wap. (wap bridged over gprs). It works pretty good.

Guys, it seems that you just don't get it - it IS free for me and another 2000000 users of Orange-Israel to use wap over gprs, and, I sure, there are other (mostly european) companies that give such a service for free /low flat rate too...
So, if you don't want it, don't use it, nobody is forcing you to do so. But, please, your messages look like you are trying to make so that such a plugin will not exist, and this doesn't makes any sense...
