I think I keep hearing the same songs when using Random and Shuffle

Hi all

I've used Foobar for many years, but mostly for playing back CDs.  I'm now ripping my collection to FLAC and the number of tracks/ albums is growing steadily.

One of the things I looked forward to the most was random/shuffle playback of all tracks.  So I'm using those features all the time at the moment.  I am finding that a lot of the same tracks get played, whilst others do not get played at all.  I've done a little internet research and found a few others who have felt similar.

I wondered if anyone could share their thoughts and experiences on the matter?  Also, I wondered if anyone could tell me whether:

1.  There are any random/shuffle playback plug-ins which might make things more.... errr...  random!

2.  There is a simple feature (or a plug-in if not) that will tell me how many times a tracks has been played.  I can then use such a thing to see if my thoughts are really true about the repetitions, or whether I'm losing it a bit!

Did try looking for both these things but soon got quite lost!

Cheers

Max

Random is like a die, shuffle is like a deck of cards.
The only change for true random is that same song can't be played twice in a row.

In short: Use Shuffle, not Random.

A very powerful component for controlling playlists: Playlist Attributes, http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/...list_attributes
To keep count of times played: Playback Statistics, http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_playcount

In addition to what Andreasvb wrote and also with reference to your thread title: perhaps you'll find this information from foobar2000's FAQ useful:

Random / Shuffle Playback Order
This is HA. Not the Jerry Springer Show.

This critique has come up very often.

Best thing I would recommend is use Shuffle AND if you use facets, to set the filter next to search to 'never played'.

This will ensure only 'randomly' unplayed tracks.
