For example here I can only see one type of visualization on Columns UI and with less settings available at that. Or I noticed the Toolbar lacks some of the features on both.
As a result I feel the foobar2k world is fragmented: I like using the default UI for functionality but I probably need columns UI for pretty graphics. Can't they make default UI have more graphical features for panels, or columns UI more compatible with it, or merge the two to begin with? edit: also "SimPlaylist" doesn't work which is a good component. Also some good search components/features. This post has been edited by fateswarm: May 16 2013, 13:31 |

For example here I can only see one type of visualization on Columns UI and with less settings available at that. Or I noticed the Toolbar lacks some of the features on both. These are not “default components”. They are just features offered by both UIs in different ways. Nothing has been ‘broken’. The two UIs do not interact. One is a bundled, first-party interface; the other is not. QUOTE As a result I feel the foobar2k world is fragmented: I like using the default UI for functionality but I probably need columns UI for pretty graphics. Nothing is fragmented as neither first- nor third-party developers are under any obligation to offer full integration with and/or emulation of each other’s components. If you want nice graphics, there are plenty of other options, which you could perhaps begin to explore by opening the thread entitled “Default UI Gallery”, pinned to the top of the General subforum. QUOTE Can't they make default UI have more graphical features for panels, or columns UI more compatible with it, or merge the two to begin with? Now we get to the crux of the matter. Columns UI is abandonware. The developer disappeared a couple of years ago, and the component has been drifting away in functionality and compatibility ever since. It is not the responsibility of first- or other third-party developers to compensate for this. Your choices are either to accept the limitations of CUI, which by now are largely unavoidable, or to move to the DUI and compatible extensions thereof and accept that you will have to put in some work to create a new configuration. In any case, implying that CUI is a core part of fb2k and hence that incompatibilities or inconsistencies represent broken functionality attributable to the first-party developers is completely incorrect. I actually don't imply it's core or that it should definitely be core, I was trying to be polite and don't say that I despise it but since you say it's abandonware fine, I hope it didn't exist at all at this point:P
But, is there a way for the default UI to replace things like padding between panels, colors/images of the UI etc.? Because if there isn't I'd keep remembering Columns UI. I'm saying this because it appears *THE* advantage of foobar2000 is the UI configuration by the user in an easy fashion and it should be strengthened. In fact I think this software is so amazing at that facet of it - on the default UI - that it should be THE example for more types of software. edit: To not say it could be the basis of a whole "UI Template" to base user-made packages from media players to office apps.
