What does this CUETools log mean?

Hi all,

I have a CD that I'm worried might be a bootleg. After ripping the files, I tried verifying them with CUETools, and got this:

I don't have much experience with these things, but it seems inconclusive. What exactly does it mean?

This log suggests to me that your rip is fine but your offset is incorrect.

My offset is correctly configured to +6, as confirmed by many other rips and the AccurateRip drive offsets database.

Could the CD itself have such a large offset? I thought AccurateRip v2 was supposed to be able to verify pressings regardless of offset, yet it doesn't when I rip the CD with EAC.

If this is a recent re-issue (or as you’re fearing, a bootleg—although it does not have to be one) then the offsets are different simply because the CDs come from different pressing plants—and the entries in the AccurateRip database all come from the “original” pressing. There is nothing to fear.

Could the CD itself have such a large offset?

Yes. There are even pressings whose offsets are different by 600+ samples.

I thought AccurateRip v2 was supposed to be able to verify pressings regardless of offset, yet it doesn't when I rip the CD with EAC.

Nope. As a matter of fact, CUETools is unable to do cross-pressing verification using ARv2 (only v1 can do that, and v1 is exactly what you’re using).

I ripped a few thousand CDs in the era before cross-pressing verification, and more than five percent of my CDs had everything “inaccurate” (meaning that for each of those CDs, both of the following applied: for every track, there was an AR entry which did not match, and for none of the tracks there was a matching one).

Just for illustration, the following is a foobar2000-generated AccurateRip lookup of my pressing of Frank Zappa: Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar, disc 3, which upon ripping in 2008 (without cross-pressing verification) scored Inaccurate (11, give or take a couple). Disc #1 and #2 of the same set were Accurate with the same score. This was some US music club release version. Now four years later, look at this:

Thank you for your answers.

Upon closer inspection, this appears to be an unusual European release of a Japanese album, which would agree well with the different pressing plants thing.

I thought I had to use CUETools to do post-ripping AR verification. How is it done in Foobar?

By using foo_verifier. However, it’s very lacking, especially when compared to CUETools—it only checks against the ARv1 database and for discs with HTOA or data tracks you have to load the cue sheet, which can be problematic for people who do per-track rips and don’t store cue sheets (whereas with CUETools you can just specify the length of the HTOA and/or the data track).
