[hydrogenwarez.org] Which files are neccessary to keep?

Hello,

I'm a total newbie around FLAC, and I've got some questions. When downloading FLAC albums, you often get a variety of files in the archive, not only the audio files, and I am wondering about these.

1. Log files, to my understanding they are just included to assure that the source is a real CD, but other than that do they serve any purpose? Are they neccessary for playback, burning, etc? Because not all archives includes the log files.

2. What is the purpose of auCDtect.txt files? In what context would I use them?

3. Are cue files only used when burning the Flac files onto an audio CD, or are they also used for playback? (as a playlist-type function)

4. What do I do when an archive doesn't include cue files? Can I create my own?

5. If an archive already has a cue file, but I am not satisfied with the tracknames written inside (for example if something is misspelled), can I just correct the errors by changing the tracknames in a text editor, or will that mess something up?

6. I know they're not Flac, but what are *.wv files? Why is there usually one .cue file, and also one .wv.cue included in such archives? Usually when clicking on the .cue file I get an error message (it tries to look for WAV extensions), while the wv.cue works. Why include one for Wav files if the extension is wv? I see this VERY often.

Many thanks in advance for clearing these questions up. Remember I'm a newbie, so go easy on me with the tech terms.

You could ask this questions at the community where you pirated the music.
It's only audiophile if it's inconvenient.

Remember I'm a newbie

If you think Hydrogenaudio exists to aid you in the usage of unlicensed material, then yes, very much so.

I just opened a thread earlier today with questions about files related to the Flac format and you closed it assuming I was talking about downloading illegally copied material. First of all what a ignorant way to respond. I thought this was a serious forum but apparently it's run by a bunch of know-it-all hypocrites. I'm sure nobody on here is downloading illegal music AT ALL. Well, I am not either! I am a very serious CD collector, and I happen to own over 4000 original CDs, many of them rare collectibles and still factory sealed (because I am hoping their value will increase even more as the years go by). And if you know anything at all about CD collecting, you know that removing the factory seal on a collectible drops the price down to the bottom, in many cases turning a collectible useless (because it might be impossible to find sealed, but piece of cake to find unsealed/used on eBay for $10).
So since I can't remove the factory seal on those rarities I still happened to want to enjoy the material, which I'm in many cases paid lots of money for, therefore I turned to Flac. At least where I am from, it's NOT against the law to keep or download copies of copyrighted material AS LONG AS YOU OWN A LICENSED ORIGINAL OF THAT WORK.
It's actually very insulting you assumed I was a cheap pirate who can't afford to pay for originals.
Do me a favor and unregister my username, if you're going to be ignorant and assume sh!t you don't have a clue about, then I don't have any use for this forum.
Thanks for nothing.

Whether you own a licensed original or not, I think the legitimacy of your claim to be entitled to a copy made by someone else is highly dubious.

You have to accommodate people’s assumptions, due to both (1) the respective likelihoods that any given Person A is referring to either an unlicensed copy or the (I suspect legally equivalent) practise of downloading someone else’s rip of something you own; and (2) the fact that, if you are so averse to being mischaracterised as such, you still didn’t open with a disclaimer, which might have been sufficient for some.

Moreover, the probability of dismissive reactions is increased by the fact that answers to many of these questions are probably available via searching (here, Google, or wherever you prefer) and/or enquiring on some site that is actually geared towards releasing copies, however one chooses to interpret the associated legality, of music—which Hydrogenaudio is not.

I didn’t have to write this (TOS #7 and all that), but it seemed to require clarification. I’m an ignoramus when it comes to the legal issues in your, Hydrogenaudio’s, or any other country; but, all in all, it’s my hunch that this thread does not fit here. Take that as you will. Perhaps another member of staff would like to comment. One thing that the site does not do, however, is to delete accounts upon request.
