CDS-200 produces consistent or inconsistent errors

hi all,

trying to rip a disc at the moment, and EAC reports errors/suspicious positions at various points (seem to be at multiples of 6 seconds, consistent with what i've heard about CDS-200).

i'd assumed that these errors, deliberately introduced, would be consistent from rip to rip, but they're not. Sometimes it reads right through them fine, other times it gets stuck doing error correction. Sometimes glitches are present at the suspicious positions, other times not.

I'm running a Lite-On 52327S, with C2 both on and off, and can't get consistent results with either. I also hear some crackling on the 3rd track which always seems to be present - i'm not sure whether this is an error from the copy protection or whether it's just there anyway.

the cd is Coldplay's new Speed of Sound single btw - does anybody know if there is a non-copy protected version available? I have the Australian version, and it's got CDS-200 on it.

cheers.

I find I get the best results with CDS protected CD's using EAC's burst mode, and setting the speed to either 4x or 1x. Do a test&copy and if the CRCs match, there is next to zero chance that your rip is flawed.

I find the CRCs mismatch every single time when ripping a CDS200 disc in burst mode. Errors aren't audible though.

Also wouldn't "fast" mode be better than burst since at least it does jitter correction?

Burst mode uses the drives own error correction, rather than software correction.
With my Plextor drive, all of my CDS protected discs have been able to rip cleanly using EAC burst mode at 4x or 1x. It might depend on each drive's DAE quality as to how well it works.

By the way - does someone have any links to some interesting documents explaining how exactly CD-200 protection works...? Or is it kept completely confidential? I only found very vague comments on this.
