FLAC Mac OS and Ogg FLAC. Options

Having acquired a PowerBook I naturally want to play FLAC on it. To start off with this seemed like a fruitless quest however I eventually found a relatively new project called Cog

Although it's only at version 0.05 it works very well and even does correct gapless playback for Ogg and FLAC.

However since this is based on Unix libraries it doesn't help for playing FLAC inside QuickTime based applications. this is important as I want to be able to use FLAC files inside QLab. QLab is a show control system for playing back audio cues for theatrical productions and a myriad of other things.

I then found XiphQT which seems to be where the project for providing a QuickTime component for FLAC ended up.

Josh: How about providing a link to this on the MacOS section of the FLAC home page and removing the broken links to FLACer etc.

However this can only play Ogg-FLAC not native FLAC.

It's technically possible to convert FLAC into Ogg-FLAC without re-encoding but there doesn't seem to be a utility to do it. Any ideas?

You could have saved yourself 30 minutes, by looking at the download page in the wiki. We are trying to add more applications for different OS's like OS/X and Linux.

the libflac tools have a command-line switch (if you weren't familiar with it), which allows you to wrap flac file inside an Ogg container. I don't know if it could be done without re-encoding, my guess would be no, writing FLAC files into an Ogg container is an extra step, in much the same way Vorbis packets are written into an Ogg container.

If you prefer a graphical interface, Max can convert from FLAC to Ogg FLAC. The resulting files are playable using the XiphQT components in QuickTime Player.

vorbiscomment can rewrite vorbis packets from slightly damaged files to create a fixed copy. I too suspect something similar would be possible for Ogg FLAC.
