Sorry this is a really generic question but I have Windows and I want a free FLAC to MP3 converter that you don't have to pay for/register. I downloaded FLAC to MP3 and it makes you register. Again, I apologize for my ignorance, but any programs or suggestions would really be appreciated.

A couple other options:
LameDropXPd XRECODE (This is the old free XRECODE. The current XRECODE II is $15 USD.) Audacity (Audacity is an audio editor it's not that convenient if all you need to do is encode/convert files.) (I don't work with FLAC that often, but I beileve the above tools will work.) Paying $30 FYI - You can find plenty of free MP3 encoders (usually based on LAME), but when you distribute an MP3 encoder, you are supposed to pay royalties. So, fully-licensed MP3 encoders are not free. I don't know if 'FLAC to MP3' is legitimate, and I would never pay for such software unless it's clear that it's legitimate... dBpoweramp and Winamp do pay their royalties and those programs are not free (for the versions that encode MP3). And, if you go to the LAME website, you will not find a functional (compiled) LAME encoder... just the raw source code. This post has been edited by DVDdoug: May 12 2011, 19:53 |

foobar2000 is free. It will both encode and decode the MP3 format for free as well through its graphical user interface (and almost any imaginable other audio format too, given that you provide the encoder executable).
You will need to supply the LAME encoder executable to foobar2000, which can be downloaded for free here : http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.php (it's not the source code, but rather the compiled ready-to-go version) This post has been edited by asmodood: May 12 2011, 21:31 |

OF course if you don't want to pay for a licensed encoder you could consider whether you "need" mp3. Maybe you could do as well with a free format like ogg/vorbis.

mslag,
I was wondering if you are using foobar2000? I'm thinking about it, and wondered if you have had a great success with encoding and decoding mp3's? I need the mp3's to have awesome quality, because they will be played on a home theater system. I love that it will support about any audio format. Does anyone else use anything that they like better? Thanks! |

foobar2000 will convert from VBR V9 up to VBR V0, and also 320kbps CBR. It'll be sufficiently "awesome" if you wish to stick with MP3.
I personally use it for converting anything and everything. This post has been edited by tropicalfish: Jun 28 2011, 05:51 |

I need the mp3's to have awesome quality The quality of the MP3s is dependent not on the decoder/interface, foobar2000; but on the encoder, LAME—but fear not: the latter does a great job.
