Happy New year to all! First time poster over here.

I found and installed foobar2000 today after researching a "better" pc based audio player. I just bought some new speakers and want to take full advantage of them however I can.

I've run into an issue and get the exact phrase I put in the topic title when converting my audio files directly from the original cd's to AIFF format. ["Could not update tags (Unsupported file format)"] I searched that exact phrase here and came back with zero results so I thought I would post this question.

I ran a test and ripped the same cd to another folder as mp3's and there's no problem. The mp3's tagged 100% correct.

Anyone know a work-around for this issue? I chose the aiff format trying to stay as lossless as possible, yet compatible with other media players. I wanted to but did not use flac because I also have a Mac and I believe iTunes will not play flac files. (?)

Can you tag AIFF? Maybe you can....
Anyways if you wanna go lossless you should really go with a compressed lossless format.
I don't know what iTunes support. It supports Apple lossless. Foobar once had a plug for that, I don't know if it has any longer...
But you can play flac, wavpack and many others on OS X with Cog.

Today I tried to take the same files and conver them to .WAV and got the same error again. Does anyone know why the tags appear to be non-updatable in these two lossless (sort of) formats?

I DO NOT want to convert these files to MP3! (Dang-it!)

Compress them to FLAC. It is *lossless* (Dang-it!)

Neither WAV or AIFF can be tagged. If you are going to use iTunes as your audio player, then use Apple Lossless.

Are you suggesting to convert to AAC?

If so, is there a "how to" that makes this process simple? The foobar documentation says it will convert to AAC, but I do not see it as an option in the converter prefs or dialogue.

I've looked all over (the web) and went through the preferences in foobar and AAC is not an otion. I found an "itunesencoder" but that looks like a pain in the butt to setup.

I figured this out. I got the download from nero.com and got the mp4 (aac) encoder installed.

Will these files show up as AAC in iTunes although the encoder tagged them as mp4? OR will they be playable in this format from iTunes??

Apple Lossless & AAC (Lossy) are different codecs. If you use iTunes for encoding, they are both included and are setup in the Preferences area. To use these with fb2k, you will need to use iTunesencode.exe to do the encoding.

Some earlier post mentioned using Cog with your mac, so that may be a wiser idea. You'll have to use two different audio players, but it will make it easier to encode using FLAC. This is what I would do if I found myself in the same situation. FLAC should be very easy to setup in both Cog & fb2k.

They should be ok in iTunes, but you should change the extension from MP4 to m4a, as that is more preferrable to iTunes. The m4a is strictly for MP4 audio.

Edit: Nero AAC is a Lossy format like LAME mp3. I thought you were looking for Lossless codecs?
