Does anyone know what the transfer mode of this drive is? Seems I can't get it out of PIO mode 4. It's on the same IDE channel as a dvd drive that is capable of DMA2.

DMA should work for this drive.
On one channel I have DVD LG DRD8160B, master in Ultra DMA mode 2 and LG CED-8120B, slave in Multi-Word DMA mode 2 (settings autodetected by system). |

I think this is a hardware/ XP issue. Trying to work it out. If anyone has any ideas, give me a shout. Both drives (Hitatchi GD-7500 and LG 8120B) are stuck in Pio4 on my secondary IDE controller

Case gave the best advice regarding these situations:
XP changes mode from DMA to PIO if it detects transfer problems on the bus. You should be able to restore it back to DMA by searching with regedit for 'MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed' (if the drive is master) or 'SlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed' (on slave device) and change all the entries you find to 0xffffffff. Do the same to 'MasterDeviceTimingMode' (or 'SlaveDeviceTimingMode') and reboot, this should fix it. If this trick didn't help, try uninstalling your IDE drivers and let Windows reinstall them after reboot. I had to do something very similar to get DMA enabled with an LG drive and Windows 2000. I have tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling, the newest VIA 4in1's and also uplugging the entire cable and booting and then shutting down pluggin it in and booting again to let it re-autodetect. Nothing worked. I have not edited the registry yet because:
WHat I have found is that in the BIOS, it will not allow me to select DMA modes for the Burner. It will allow me to select DMA for the DVD, but if I am to assume correctly, since they are on the same controller, the DVD can only run as fast as the slowest device (the burner stuck in PIO) SO I'm led to believe that this is BIOS issue and not a Windows issue. Unfortunately, I have an HP box and have already updated the BIOS with the only available update for my board (and, man, did it ever take a long time to find that).
