Guitar Goddesses

How can someone look so good and play like that. Just listened to Steve Vai together with Orianthi

And I thought there was just Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart.

Amazing how alive the Blues is.

I have to say I don't really get the fuss about Orianthi. I hadn't heard any of her playing that I'd really liked yet, though I certainly haven't heard nearly all of it. That video with Vai was a step up from anything I'd heard before, at least there seemed to be some direction and phrasing to the playing instead of what I'd call mostly wanking without going anywhere. But the Voodoo Chile thing was more indicative of her live playing I'd heard before, mostly just noise.

I'd actually say "guitar god" music is at the top of my favourite genres. I have nothing but love for Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, Satriani, Petrucci, Paco De Lucia, etc. Oddly enough Vai is not even close to being a favourite, even though it's obvious he has loads of technical talent - he just doesn't speak to me much either with where his compositions go. Then you have guys like Malmsteen, I was totally blown away by Far Beyond The Sun when I heard it, but then lately I've finally heard the rest of his stuff, and wow, it's all just the exact same thing over and over - he's what I'd consider an insanely talented player technically but doesn't go anywhere interesting with it, it's actually quite depressing.

Never heard of Ana before, but that speaks to me much better, way more tasteful/emotional playing. Sure sounded like Riviera Paradise channeled though. Always interested to find more interesting artists in this genre. Anyway, who am I to criticize, but it's fun to talk about this stuff anyway.

Having listened to some of Orianthi's cd's I have to say the first one - "Violet Journey" is still the most blues influenced one with excellent guitar playing and to me her best effort.
The latter ones unfortunately for me are drifting more into the pop realm.
As to noise - I guess you never visited a Hendrix live concert....

Ana seems to be a more mature player, and more in the tradition of SRV. Channeling is good, when you develop from there.

Unfortunately Hendrix passed on a few months before I was born. But I must say I prefer listening to live Hendrix over studio Hendrix, and of any live material I collect Hendrix is the most sought after for me. I didn't even become a huge fan of Hendrix until I was exposed to his life playing. Raunchy, raw, emotional and loud doesn't necessarily equate to "noise" to me - he knew what he was trying to get at with all of it. Similarly I grew up listening to metal and there's lots of it that I love but lots I don't think much of, and most of that has to do with the emotion a song can put across.
