FooBar Sound

OK when using Winamp3 it blanked out all other sounds. All I could hear is my music, but with foobar I can still hear the AIM sounds, and the clicking in I.E. anyway to change that? Thanks

Hmmmm. The cause for this is likely to be the sound output method used by default in these apps. Using WaveOut output is most likely to block other sounds with older soundcards (SB AWE32/ SB16 etc), whereas Directsound output is most likely to allow other sounds to play at the same time.

If you really want Winamp 3 to work better, change the output mode to DirectSound in the preferences. You might also try updating your sound drivers to see if that cures the problem with WaveOut (if that's where the problem is: more information about your setup would have helped in this respect). I'd just use foobar if I were you though.

If this doesn't work, try randomly switching output modes in both apps and use your powers of thought to determine what works, and what doesn't.

btw: I may have misunderstood... did you want sounds blocked out? If so, Do eveything I said, but backwards... =)

hehe, thanks, yes I want other sounds blocked out. It is annoying to hear IM's when listenting to music. I will change foobar to waveout and see if that fixes it.

Bear in mind that the fact that the sounds are blocked out is a symptom of 'old soundcard', 'bad drivers' or 'bad winamp.' It might be more sensible to turn off the AIM sounds in AIM. Defenitely nuke that clicking sound in IE! Just to go Sound options in control panel and remove the Start Navigation sound for Internet Explorer.

hehe I will do that.

OK I tried waveout and that didnt work, then I tried the other option.. kernel streaming? And that seems to have done it  They all sound th same to me, what is the difference?

Thanks

nevermind, the difference is posted all over the forums  Ok another n00b question, how do I seek? (go to a certain part in a song)

The difference is the way in which the sound gets to the card. WaveOut sends it straight to your sound drivers wave data handling majigger, DSound sends it to directsound which can then to a bunch of stuff with it, before passing it to the card according to driver instructions. Kernel Streaming uses the Windows 2k and up kernel interface for sound, which bypasses certain steps that may or may not reduce sound quality. Ideally, they should all sound the same, but often drivers will do things in interesting ways, and one method will end up sounding better, or being more accurate.

(I am mostly guessing about the paths the output methods take, but I hope this gives you some idea of the potential differences. Basically, use the one that sounds best).

-EDIT-

Ah, a reply. Right well, ignore the above then. As for seeking, the arrow keys'll do that for you in FB2k. Not precise, but there are certain developments occuring in this area.
