WinMx Gone

Some of you will have noticed the WinMx network is now down.It was possible to find many high bitrate Lame and FhG files with a bit of patience with this program.

Can anyone recommend a suitable replacement?

Networks like Kazaa tend to have mostly 128 mp3 files not suitable.

What works best these days..?

Possible TOS violation... Funny, why would you be interested in those files that are ripped and encoded by the worst pieces of software? I think pretty much all the files are junk in those networks.

Agreed.

I kinda surprised a question like that popped up over here.
Guess I haven't been around here long enough...

Some people actually do download songs or albums first to sample them.  If they are worthy, they buy.  I have some friends who do such things.

While I support such usage of peer-to-peer networks, the thick-skulled record labels do not, and most importantly it's also illegal. As such, information regarding how and where to obtain illegal music can not be discussed on Hydrogen Audio.

I buy the music by small artists - if everyone did this, the big artists would become small artists eventually, and the world would be fair etc.

Big artists don't need it as they have a huge amount of loyal fans and people that don't use the web, and always will.

Small artists you definately need to buy their stuff, and often I have to get stuff shipped from the label itself in america (and it still only comes out at £10, with p&p).

If a label has no sample tracks of decent quality/downloadeable, I usually get the album.

For instance, I got Fall of Troy's album advanced leaked, listened, and preorder (+ it had a t-shirt! more people should give away t-shirts with their albums!).

though everyone would like to think they'll download the album and if they like it they'll buy it, it just doesn't happen most of the time.  people are lazy, i'm sorry to say.

also, if everyone bought small artist's stuff, the big artists wouldn't become small - the small artists would become big.  they would then be considered as sell-outs and indie snobs would stop buying their records and they'd be small artists again  not that indie-snobs have all that much buying power
