"Official" CDDB Genre/sub-Genre List

It's kinda frustrating some of the genres that get filled in when I rip CD's.  Of course, I can manually change them to anything I want.  Is there an "official" list.  I don't need to know atists, just wanted the standard list of genre's.

Hmmm im not sure 'bout an offical genre list, but allmusic.com has a pretty good list of genres and subgenres per artist ?

I'm looking at it now.  Tool is classified as Alternative Metal.  Hmmmmm.....
I'll give it more of a look.

Thanks.

I think the only "official" lists are the ones defined in the ID3v1 specification, and also the "winamp" extensions. IIRC I found them on Wikipedia or searching google.

I haven't found allmusic.com to be very useful as a strict guide, because I feel that it's broad genres are too broad ("Heavy Metal" might be only a style of "Rock," but in terms of classifying my library, I'd prefer it to be more distinct) and its styles are too narrow and numerous for someone with a relatively modest library (~2800 songs).  It was helpful in terms of giving me a starting point for my own list.  I just have 11 categories, which I feel gives a good balance between simplicity and descriptiveness.  They are:

Rock
Pop
R&B
Electronica
Heavy Metal
Punk
Country
Classical
Jazz
Hip Hop/Rap
Folk
Spoken Word
Comedy

If I had more jazz and classical music in my collection, I would probably need a few more categories.  But as it stands, I think what I have so far is pretty good.  As my collection evolves, so will my genre list.

For my purposes I only recall using a few, just those built into EAC; simple ones like you listed. Here are those I recall tagging as:

Rock
Punk
Metal
Alt. Rock

Game
Soundtrack

I could probably stretch far enough to use Hard Rock as well.  Incidentally, I don't see why there are Punk and Punk Rock - the difference...? Perhaps Punk Rock is ye olde stylee while Punk is just anything.

I personally cant tell the difference between

rock
alternative
punk

or any of that stuff. Only rock i can differiate are like metal :-X

personally all the mainstreme stuff (LP, JEW, Weezer, 3DD) I put rock
then all the emo/punk/etc i put as alternative (TBS, Used, Yellowcard)

but again that's me.

I know what you mean. I usually just use my discretion for telling between Alt. Rock and Punk although it's often quite simple. I wasn't sure whether to classify Rage Against The Machine as Metal though - and just WTF are CKY?

I can only think of the ID3v1 + Winamp extensions as singaiya stated.  Here's the wiki page, but the same list can be extracted using "LAME --genre-list".

I don't see the point of people posting their own unique genre categories - indybrett is trying to formalise his genres, not the other way around!

I don't bother with genre - I don't see the point in classifying my music, and I don't play by genre - I play by artist.  However, if you do use genre I would have thought standardisation was the way to go...

Edit: RATM rock.  However I'm not sure I would class them as pure "Rock" - I would say they would be "Hard Rock" or "Alt. Rock".  That said, as I'm not a genre freak (not suggesting you are) I may well be wrong.  I would have thought "Rock" was too close to "Rock'n'Roll".  This is why I don't bother with genre though - too subjective.
I'm on a horse.

Thanks Synthetic Soul.  That Wiki page was exactly what I needed.

Well, the first album's definitely the best.  I think you're right - they can't really be called Metal unless referring to 'rap metal'. I may just give up on genres too sometime as you're right, they are very subjective.

Yeah, Rap Metal sounds a little condescending for RATM.

The self-titled album is definately the best, but the other albums do have their moments: Snakecharmer from Evil Empire, Sleep Now In The Fire from The Battle of Los Angeles, and Renegades of Funk from Renegades, being the ones that spring to mind.

I quite like Audioslave as well.  It took the first album a while to grow on me, but in the end I really enjoyed it.

I believe I'm right in saying that iPods work religiously from genre, so I suppose there is something to it, but I've just never seen the need - as I say, I just think "Hmm... I fancy listening to some RATM", not "Hmm...  I sure do fancy some Alt. Rock and/or Hard Rock type music"...

Hehe, Hard Rock it is.

I just like the riffs from RATM. I agree that there are good songs on the other albums and I'd probably find more if I had a better listen to them. What I should do is download the original artists' versions of the tracks from Renegades and see just how much style the band added by themselves!

I've yet to listen to Out Of Exile but I agree that the first Audioslave album is pretty good.

Getting back to the issue of genres, you're right: there can be great differences between bands usually classified as the same genre so you have a good point. There are some bands that are just hard to classify too or have varying styles between their songs. I just use pretty broad categories and so I know what you mean about not just being able to pick any old 'alt. rock'.

i think that genre is important for ipods becuz, at least for me. When im trying to get to say ... The Used or Yellowcard, i go straight into genre & then alt rock. those type of bands are in that section and are easeir to find and play then going through artist and all the way down to t or Y.

also when u're the in the mood for those bands ... sometimes in ur genre list u'll find a band you havent heard in a whiel but becuz its in the same genre list you are in teh mood again for it.

not sure if you get what im saying?

I totally get what you're saying. My usual play mode is random within a genre (usually custom). Because if I just select an album or artist I want to hear, I have to keep choosing another one every time the album is over. The less I have to touch the player the better, right? So I find it works pretty well. And it keeps the randomness within a little boundary, so transitions aren't jarring like going from classical to metal

Yes, that does make sense.

... as does this.

Perhaps if I had a large portable player with a few GB of music on I may see the light. I have no portable player right now, except for an old Sony minisdisc, as I don't have opportunity to listen to one - I either cycle or drive to work.
