Free disc imaging tool that can be distributed

Here's my problem: a friend of mine wants to sell his old HP laptop with a Windows XP MCE 2005 license key, however, without installation media. When he bought the device, he forgot to create recovery discs and also deleted the recovery partition. Ordering a set of CDs from HP costs 40 € in Germany, which is quite expensive. Since he has a legal SN, I thought I can manage to get an installation disc from somewhere , install the OS and all drivers, activate Windows and make an image of the disc which I can put on a separate partition and maybe on a DVD. If I create an image with Acronis, Ghose, BackItUp, etc. I would also have to include the respective program so that the buyer can later recover the system. Since that isn't an option, does anyone know a good free tool that can create an image of a partition and which I can distribute together with the notebook? I don't need support for fancy stuff like backing up RAIDs or exotic volumes or which work while Windows is running - but it should be at least smart enough to not make a 1:1 copy including the empty space.
