Creative Audigy 4 Sound Card

Hi all,

I bought the Creative Audigy 4 soundcard so I could listen to DVD Audio discs on my computer. Today I bought Hotel California. The surround portion of the disc, at 96 khz, plays fine, but it will not play the stereo portion, which is sampled at 192 khz. I am very disappointed because i wanted to see how good a DVD-A sounded at its highest possible sampling rate (which I believe is 192 khz). The box the sound card came in says it is capable of playing 24-bit/192 khz sound. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Hi, claudius!

What version if (I presume) Windows are you running? As far as I know, there are limitation in pre-XPSP1 about playing 192kHz content. Also, with less that XPSP1 you can only use 6 out of the 8 channels.

Hi, abasher, I just bought a new computer about one month ago, so I am assuming it has all the latest Windows updates. Something I saw in Creative's help section did strike me - it said I must have a "DVD-Audio compatible" DVD-ROM drive. This is something I didn't think of. I thought all that was needed was the proper software and soundcard. Could this be the problem?

My L.A. Woman DVD-A plays fine, in both surround and stereo. However, the stereo of LA Woman is only 88 khz. Maybe I will just go buy a universal DVD-A/SACD player.

I have the the same disc and an Audigy 1 and have the same problem.I have tried the disc on 3 PCs all with XP SP2+ with a variety of software, but can get no stereo audio. The appz usually crash. Other 192kHz sampled discs work OK.
My conclusion was that the stereo tracks are  faulty, missing or corrupt.

Hey Waxcyl,

thanks for the information. At least now I know it probably isn't a problem with my system. Can you suggest any other DVD-A's with a good 192 Khz stereo mixes?

Everything must go - Steely Dan DVDA had terrific sound quality and is 192kHz, but unfortunately I have not been able to make myself like the music...
I cant remember if I really have had any other 192k tracks and I cant check 'cos I'm at work now.
