How do I, .ac3 for DVD projects Options

Hi All,

I know this kinda off topic for this forum, but I'll still take the liberty of posting
my question for the Audio Experts.

I'm about to buy myself some hardware to capture footage for DVD projects.
The final file format for the dvd authoring software is Mpeg2, having mpeg audio,
which is actually converted from .avi file after capture.

What I need to do is, get .ac3 audio to put it into the dvd project, whereas, I get
mpeg audio out of my capture device.

Question, how do I get the .ac3 audio. What hardware or software do I require ?

Any and all the help will be greatly appreciated.

First, capture it with a soundcard capable of performing multichannel recording. (Or any good soundcard able to record at 48kHz, if you intend to use stereo streams)

Then, encode it with SonicFoundry's Softencode, or DigiGram multichannel encoder, or yet Surcode Dolby Digital. All of them use the same AC3 encoding libraries. (6.2.2)

Edit: Other idea:
Capture everything to AVI.
In your MPEG2 encoder, set it to encode video only - that should generate a .M2V file.
Then, use avi2wav to separate a .wav stream from the original .avi
Encode the .wav stream with one of the programs mentioned.
And then create a .vob with a DVD authoring program, multiplexing the .m2v with the .ac3 file.

Do the soft encoders mentioned work under Win2k or do they need to be installed
under Win98se ?

What audio capture hardware would you recommend, as I am yet to buy one.

They work in my Win2k.

I'm clueless. I rarely do audio capture, and my SBlive works fine for what I want.

The reason I asked the question about what OS supports the encoders is that
I got myself Sonic Foundry's Soft Encode 1.0 off the net and the Readme.wri file
says, it is for Win95 and NT

Anybody else, please......

It works perfectly fine on my 2K. Are you experiencing problems to install it?

They only produced version 1.0, and then development was abandoned. You can't find it anymore on SonicFoundry's page. So, no, no updates.

Yes, what's happening is that the download folder has this instruction :COPY README.WRI TO THE *ROOT* OF THE PARTITION FROM WHICH
YOU INSTALL

Even if I do or don't copy this file, it tends to fail encoding. I have ripped an Audio CD
and am using .WAV file, into each of the six channels to test it.

Tested on Win98se and Win2k..................

Whatz happening....please lemme know.

A note, read the FAQ's, Q&A's and make a forum search before posting as there is a high possibility that every question you have is already answered.

I would bet you need a sampling rate of 48kHz. Just a guess.

Well, Ookami, I hope you noticed I was just joking. That was the main reason of the ":D" there.
