My iPod battery lasts longer compared to Android for same format. Why?

Hi,

I am using both an IPOD and a smart phone (Android phone). However, over a period of time, I observed that IPOD can play for longer time the same kind of music but Android fails to do so.
I was wondering if anybody noticed such?

Any ideas in this direction?
Thanks & Regards
Murali

What do you mean play longer? Battery life? If so it's expected, from all the reviews I've seen iPods have longer battery life.

The "same kind of music" part confuses me.

The test I did was about playing the same MP3 song in a loop on IPOD & my smartphone.
IPOD battery lasts at least 50% more time than my smartphone. I was wondering the root cause of this?

Is it something to do with Apple's optimizations on Mp3 decoding or Audio codec chip or something else?

Your smartphone has more components than your iPod (e.g. 3G connectivity), which draw a fair amount of power. Also, there are probably many "services" running on your smartphone, periodically synchronizing themselves (Google services such as Gmail) or getting data from the cellular network. Your iPod is probably void of all that, and Wi-Fi might even be turned off on it. So all it's doing is probably mostly just playing music, while your smartphone is doing a lot more stuff in the background, even when you're not using it.

Before comparing the performance of these two devices, I made sure only music is the activity on these devices. On the Android, disabled all services, including all the network (2G / 3G) & Connectivity (Wi-Fi / GPS) . Since I am trying to compare apples to apples, Just the music playback time to music playback time is being compared, and I still see really lot of difference. Like you rightly pointed, Display is also a huge consumer of power on smart phones. So, made sure within 1 minute of starting the test, display dies out (configured the display time out of 1 minute). Smart phone with 2100 mAh battery lasted about 36 horus and IPOD went more than 60 hours. Since I don't have the power rating of IPOD, I am not sure what battery they have put in there.

An iPod is one device, Android could cover any number of devices with any number of difference OS versions and battery sizes. It's not "apples to apples" as you put it. You can't do an iPod vs Android comparison for battery life, t doesn't make sense.

Read any number of reviews you can find by using a search engine to find out about battery life and why one may be better than the other.

It's nothing to do with audio, you're trying to compare devices which do a multitude of different things.

It's like trying to compare my Sansa Clip+ to my Nexus 4 and saying why doesn't my Nexus 4 last as long.

You're simply not. You're comparing apple(s) and elephants.
It's only audiophile if it's inconvenient.

What iPod? 60 hours sounds like a lot. My iPod Classic lasts about 32 hours, and Apple rates the iPod Touch 5 at 40 hours of continuous playback time with a fully charged battery.

I don't have an Android phone (just a tab).  You can turn off phone service (voice, not data) while playing music?

Like everyone is saying,  you don't know the ipod battery, aren't saying what model ipod or what model phone.  Too many unknown variables to try to draw conclusions about Android efficiency.

Dear internet

I've discovered that different devices based on different technology running different software with different capability are different.

32 hours - I wish.  I have an iPod Video, or 5.5, and it only seems to get around 11, Apple must have crummy quality control

Given that your MP3 player launched in the mid-2000s, you're either running a third party battery or the original battery at ~2-3 times its expected lifespan.  Either way, thats not too bad that you're getting that battery life.

My Android phone has a 3300 mAh battery. I'm pretty sure that if I turned off all the radios it would play music for a pretty damn long time.

But its been like that from day 1.

I doubt it. Lithium-ion batteries steadily decline in capacity over the years (maybe not the new types), so you might count yourself lucky to have such a long playing time left instead of complaining.
Music: sounds arranged such that they construct feelings.

If it had been 11 hours on day one, it should have declined to 2 hours by now. It is unlikely for a lithium-ion battery to age that well under realistic conditions.

My iPod nano 5g, what is supposed to have 24 hours of battery life, plays over 26 hours after 3 years of daily usage.

I just replaced my original iPod 5G battery, for it was down to 12 hours of playback time.

Unlike (I assume) the complainant I actually have logs of systematic tests of battery life (in Rockbox and Apple firmware) over the last 7 years.  It exceeded Apple's claimed runtime by 2 hours when new.
Creature of habit.

I don't mean to be harsh but you are trying to test something in a way that's irrelevant. Testing the play-time of the same loop of MP3 on two different devices running different systems, with different processors, powered by (probably) different capacity batteries is rather meaningless.

It's a bit like saying car A does more MPG than ship B, is this because the car has a more efficient engine? Actually, even that would be a fairer question.

Not possible to say, based on differing play-times alone. Likely to be "something else" though.

It's pretty simple why your android device takes more battery power than your ipod- you have the whole android OS running, all those services, extra apps you have running, that stuff doesn't go away while you're playing music. Further =more, they are two different devices with 2 different batteries and 2 different form factors, one of which (the android) likely has a larger screen which is well-known to be the largest drain on any android device.
