Unexpected behavior in FhG AAC encoder

The latest Winamp 5.66 has fhg .16. Please test the bug again?

In short, it's fixed.

I had been dealing with the holiday preparations and using a different machine. Also I felt obligated to re-test the prior encoder in order to reproduce the glitch. This was not as easy as one might think- there were several renderings of the project. Remarkably, it appears none of the other down-mixes cause the encoder error.

Anyway, I used the new encoder (specifically Winamp 5.666 build 3512) and kept the rest of the software the same as previously. Encoding speed and bitrate appear identical, the problematic frames are not present in the new version.

I want to thank the Winamp developers for their efforts and wish them the best in the future.

As winamp is coming to a close i wonder if we will receive any future updates from fhgaac or maybe an updated enc_fhgaac.dll from another app which we could use, it would be a shame if development stopped because of the closure of winamp.

enc_fhgaac.dll is a part of Winamp. No Winamp - no new versions of this DLL.

As C.R.Helmrich said today:
The codec has long been available in e.g. some Magix, Sonnox, or Sony software. They should contain the same version as Winamp, especially the Sonnox plug-in. Or are you asking for free-of-charge software?

updates for enc_fhgaac.dll were only happening when there were updated encoder libraries to use anyway (after the first few iterations to resolve non-library issues in 2011/2012) so whether there would have been any updates or not is a completely different issue. and using it outside of Winamp is a complete grey area anyway as the license which has been paid for the AAC encoding support in Winamp is only for use within Winamp and not for use outside of Winamp via alternate software.

Yeah i looked at Magix, Sonnox, and i cant find out which sony software its in. I wouldn't bother using any magix software as in my experience its not very good. It would be handy if fhgaac was implemented into something more mainstream so it could be fully supported by this community.

I think it was SoundForge but don't remember exactly. Sorry, Fraunhofer don't sell to many mainstream-software companies, Nullsoft were kind of an exception.

It seems like a bit of a waste for fraunhofer to create a great sounding aac encoder and not try to implement it into a more commonly used software. maybe they should just concentrate on improving fdkaac.

I think you misunderstood. Fraunhofer has dozens of business customers which buy the exact same encoder or customized versions of it (and which pay well), but most of these customers don't sell mainstream software. There's absolutely no waste.
