Proxomitron for IE works fairly well, though there are certain problems with it (at least there were when I last tried it, they could be fixed now).  One good example is that Proxomitron mangles the incoming HTML, sometimes to where it breaks proper rendering of the page.  A common instance of this would be where proxomitron would add a bunch of <script> code to the head of the document (invalidly), which would interfere with IE's CSS standard's compliant/quirk mode switching based on DOCTYPE.  This is only one example, but it highlights the inherent problem with this sort of approach.  Most people might not care I suppose, but it's especially annoying to a webmaster when someone complains about broken rendering, which is actually caused by their popup blocker behaving poorly.

Google's Toolbar now has a pop-up stopper.

Of course I recommend Mozilla Firebird instead of IE.

I normally stay the f*ck away from internet explorer now, but I have tried some of the shells briefly and in my opinion that is the best choice if you must use an IE-based browser because of choice  or just shitty coding that Moz or firebird/phoenix (my first choice for backup browsers) cannot handle. Some of the better shells do at least approach the functionality of Opera or Mozilla.

I've been using Avant Browser for a few days now and my first impression is pretty favorable. It's definately much better than vanilla IE.

For now, Mozilla Firebird will still remain my favorite browser (I miss type-ahead find and the ability to only accept cookies from the originating website in AB), but there are some situations where Avant Browser may prove useful:

* Mozilla Firebird loads a bit too slow and is a bit too resource-hungry for my laptop, so I'll probably keep using Avant Browser as the default browser on my laptop (Firebird will remain the default on my desktop, though).

* Some websites simply NEED IE to work properly. For those websites, Avant Browser will be a great alternative to vanilla IE.

* Whenever somebody asks me for a popup stopper for IE (like with this post ), I'll recommend AB instead. I think it may prove difficult to influence some people (especially casual PC users and newbies) to use Firebird instead. They will notice "rendering problems" on some websites and will blame Firebird instead of the people who built the webpages.

Edit: Added Firebird features I miss in AB.

I've tried alot of shells and popupblockers, and finally have found the perfect match

MyIE2+Proxomitron 4.5 = perfect... or as perfect as can be

there are some (very few) that are not displayed properely [almost only multiple frames pages], but i just add them to the bypass list.

Dibrom, hmm, good to know. Just added *.hydrogenaudio.org to Promomitron's bypass list and I'm seeing a proper page again, right on. Worked fine before the upgrades, working fine again now that I've bypassed it for here.

Althalus, haha, had to disable Proxomitron to register on the Proxomitron forums, too funny.

heh, yeah, i remember that.
i had problems posting just after i installed it. It'd let me write my message and after i pressed 'Post' poooof, it just reloaded the page. all text gone. Couldnt even use the Back function. Was  || close to uninstall it right away, but fortunately i didn't :-)

For optimal Proxomitron settings, i'd recomend loading some of the filters that are in the files section. for example the JD list.

I'm using JD Advanced i think, it works perfectly.

For the Proxomitron, using level 2 settings with some small changes is usually enough (or load some filters). A higher "protection" level is nothing but craziness.
Anyway, on some pages if needed, Proxo can be disabled with just two clicks. Then refresh and you'll get the "natural" display.
