The default of 5 made sense a couple years ago when computers where slower. But for routine use it makes sense to add -6 to the command line these days if you have a reasonably fast computer. Makes only a little difference, but then takes a little more time.

-V -6 -T "title=%t" -T "artist=%a" -T "album=%g" -T "date=%y" -T "tracknumber=%n" -T "genre=%m" -T "comment=whatever rip and source info you want to include" %s

All the -T stuff is tags; of course, that only gets passed along if you look up the disc in the cddb database, or enter the info in EAC. You can obviously put anything you want into comments, and that will vary.

This was posted above, but since it's useful - screenshots of where to find the EAC settings:

Setting EAC compression options

tcmjr,

I'm a little confused.  You said...

Diference between -5 and -8 was only 1mb with the whole album.
  But -8 took 3x more ..

am I misunderstanding you?  It sounds like you are saying that -8 -lax really save you almost nothing and yet take three times as long.  So why do that?

FLAC -8 takes 3x longer to encode than -5. The difference in file size is usually not that significant (per album - over 100s of CDs, it can add up).

I am a newbie so this may be a daft question. But having looked at the EAC compression options and read all the tutorials and info I can find I am not sure whether the bitrate needs to be set. I am using EAC + FLAC. If it does need to be set, what should be the bitrate? I am very concerned about producing high quality audio. Many thanks.

The "bitrate" is the quality setting you put in the command line (for example -8 or -6.) The bit rate drop down box in the preferences does not effect the encoding. If I remember correctly it is only used to estimate the file size of the encoded file. (In the "Compr. Size" column in the main widow.) Since it only goes to 320 you are not going to get a good estimate on lossless files.

That's the key point. With flac as the external compression encoder, where you select "User Defined Encoder", the bit rate drop down in EAC is ignored.

The High quality and Low quality radio buttons are used though, and can be useful for an easy way to swap between compression rates.

E.g.: if you use the command line options:

-V %h-8%h %l-5%l -T "title=%t" -T "artist=%a" -T "album=%g" -T "date=%y" -T "tracknumber=%n" -T "genre=%m" -T "comment=EAC Secure Rip" %s

If the radio button is set to high quality you will use compression level 8. If it is set to low quality you will use compression level 5.

Useful if you do happen to compress in two different levels. Not very useful if you don't.

Edit: How/why the Hell did this thread get resurrected?!
