Democrats, no.
  Liberal bloggers, yes.

edit: of course they didn't really "take over" google either, merely attempted to use Google's algorithms to their own advantage, if this could even be called an advantage. Myself, I haven't typed "miserable failure" into google a whole lot recently

Maybe just to rant a bit more - Does it seem to other people that searches on google turn up a lot of business? seems like every 2nd search turns up the first 10 links being some business selling something "related" to my search. Google is losing favour with me when I have to sift through all these cheap marketing scams!
rant done

I agree completely with your observation TwoJ, Google has been annoying me with their highly-ranked business related links on topics that have little relevance to business.
I think I'll go back to metacrawler.
edit: and I did, and they do have a plugin (not that firebird seems to need it).

Yes, Google is plagued by professional SEO firms (Search Engine Optimizers). They work with hundreds of bogus link pages ("linkfarms"), different pages for visitors and the google robot ("cloaking"), manipulated guestbooks, blind text, manipulated redirectors, affiliate programs (especially eBay does!), and so on. All more or less targeted at Google, because it's the most popular search engine. I mostly use AlltheWeb these days.
