just want to know, when some programs, let say, winamp or foobar, play mp3 files direct from CD, do they need any disk space (from HDD) to operate or just direct the data from mp3 files to soundcard/cpu ?
thanks

Other than the space the programs themselve take up they shouldn't use any space*.

*Winamp does save a copy of the playlist to the HD when it closes, so I guess it does take up a minisule amount of space.

You just don't know, as it depends on the system. Windows can swap stuff to the swap file without the program 'knowing' about it, and pretty much most programs use the temp directory.

And, although some sound cards have mp3 'acceleration', it's almost never used, so the software does the decoding. In this case bets are off, it depends on the mp3 decoding engine.
