Hey all; this is something really weird I can't seem to be able to solve myself. I'm on XP SP2 and I've just installed windows media player 10. All of a sudden, the info Windows usually shows you about mp3 files (the Id tags you can see either in grey below the file name on the explorer windows; or viewing the properties of each file) are gone! And this is only for mp3, any other file type (e.g. .exe) will say things like 'executable file' etc etc. But not on mp3s! Even if you hover the mouse arrow over the file, the only info it'll show is how big it is (instead of title, album, kbps, etc, as before)
Hope someone realizes what's wrong with my PC. Cheers! |

Like a lot of Windows software - uninstall, try cleaning the registry, reinstall v9 - if that works then try the *upgrade* to v10

and i did to no avail! Went back to series 9, had some registry cleaner do the job, threw wmp10 back again and even qcdplayer 4.51 (the one i normally use) and nothing; just keeps happening but only to mp3 files (just the ones that i really can use info about). really shameful, thanks again Bill..
Honestly, cheers to those who replied |

I didn't experience this problem, however I'm wondering if this could be because of file associations. I did notice when reluctantly updating to WMP10 (only because of it being considered a "security update") that it annoyingly automatically registered filetypes it could play. Maybe it caused a conflict on your system with an alternative player that already had the MP3 file association. Perhaps trying to register the MP3 filetype with WMP may work, then again.
-------------------- Complexity of incoherent design.

open the registry navigate to
My computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3 there you should see an entry Persistenthandler with a GUID of {098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb} also in the .mp3 branch you should be able to see a string value Content Type = audio/mpeg -------------------- Dimitris

Close! but not quite! I checked my register and found much too much rubbish on the .mp3 folder, I decided to keep what you told me plus some "Default" which i can't erase. There was also a folder name "mp3folder" i decided to complete erase. I haven't had any trouble with playing mp3s, but there was no chance either. Any hopes?
cheers to everyone! |

What is selected under the view settings? Try "Tiles" (works for me)

Don't know if it is related, but are you able to check the properties of video files (avi container, for example)? If not, did you try running "regsvr32 shmedia.dll"?

mOrbidini you're a genious!!!!! I must say I didn't see my Id tags coming back again then tried out what you said on your last post and worked just fine! everything's just as normal, thank you very much indeed.
If it's not too much can you explain what I did when I ran "regsvr32 shmedia.dll" ? cheers again! |
