Here is a new test version.
Changes against latest alpha are in ABR/CBR modes. The goals are: *more correct bitrate at high abr settings *reduce potential low freq noise.

QUOTE (ToS_Maverick @ Jun 6 2005, 02:50 PM) No. Something went wrong with your download. Cause the file extracts perfectly here! Gabriel, I`m still a little upset that you only provide Win32 binaries. This nicelly excludes us Mac OS X and GNU/Linux users! Oh well... This post has been edited by krmathis: Jun 6 2005, 13:58 |

May I please have the switches to achieve something near the old -aps results?

OK, how about, what are the recommended settings for this version of LAME? I am not sure what else to ask to get a command line that gives comparable bit rates and audio quality to the current 3.90.3 and -aps.
I don't wish to start a flame war about what version is best. I just prefer to use a preset that is tuned, rather than playing the 'my switch settings are better than your switch settings' game. I have been very pleased with 3.90.3 with -aps and am looking for the rough equivalent. |

well, this version isn't meant to use with aps and is not even meant to use for production. It's a test version for CBR/ABR. Just stick to 3.90.3 or 3.96.1.

this time i tested a few problem samples, i hope it is useful.
BlackBird wav - a10 9/10 wav - june 10/10 a10 - june 7/10 i'm not shure about this one as you can see at the abx result of a10 against june. fatboy wav - a10 10/10 wav - june 10/10 a10 - june 10/10 => june is better it's the fist time i listened to fatboy and to me, june was better as there is less noise. hihat wav - a10 10/10 wav - june 10/10 a10 - june 9/10 => a10 is better both encodes sound like a lash (hope tha's the right translation anyway it sounds unnatural and therefore my vote goes to a10 main_theme wav - a10 7/10 wav - june 8/10 a10 - june 6/10 as i could not find a thing to concentrate on it was very difficult for me to tell the difference. both sound not as clear as the original but i can't tell more about it. for a next test, would it be useful to choose samples out of real music or should i continue with problem-samples? Hello
I've decided to test the new version at cbr 128. I'm particularly interested in this setting because a website where I upload my songs requires the mp3's to be cbr, and since the offer limited space I want the files to be as small as possible. While testing lame_june against lame 3.97 alpha 10 (compiled from cvs, LAME version 3.97 (alpha 10, Apr 8 2005 12:38:33)) and lame 3.96.1 from Rarewares with this sample (from Infected Mushroom - Never Ever Land) I noticed an annoying glitch. It appears at 0:12.15 in files encoded with alpha 10 and lame_june, but not 3.96.1. Here's the log: CODE ABC/HR for Java, Version 0.5a, 06 czerwiec 2005 Testname: im_01 Tester: 1R = D:\render\test\im_01_a10.wav 2L = D:\render\test\im_01_june.wav 3L = D:\render\test\im_01_3961.wav --------------------------------------- General Comments: --------------------------------------- 1R File: D:\render\test\im_01_a10.wav 1R Rating: 2.5 1R Comment: --------------------------------------- 2L File: D:\render\test\im_01_june.wav 2L Rating: 2.5 2L Comment: --------------------------------------- 3L File: D:\render\test\im_01_3961.wav 3L Rating: 3.5 3L Comment: --------------------------------------- ABX Results: D:\render\test\im_01_june.wav vs D:\render\test\im_01_3961.wav 8 out of 8, pval = 0.0030 D:\render\test\im_01_a10.wav vs D:\render\test\im_01_june.wav 5 out of 8, pval = 0.363 ---- Detailed ABX results ---- D:\render\test\im_01_june.wav vs D:\render\test\im_01_3961.wav Playback Range: 11.688 to 19.832 7:02:19 PM p 1/1 pval = 0.5 7:02:22 PM p 2/2 pval = 0.25 7:02:25 PM p 3/3 pval = 0.125 7:02:27 PM p 4/4 pval = 0.062 7:02:30 PM p 5/5 pval = 0.031 7:02:33 PM p 6/6 pval = 0.015 7:02:35 PM p 7/7 pval = 0.0070 7:02:38 PM p 8/8 pval = 0.0030 D:\render\test\im_01_a10.wav vs D:\render\test\im_01_june.wav Playback Range: 05.514 to 19.832 6:54:32 PM f 0/1 pval = 1.0 6:54:35 PM f 0/2 pval = 1.0 Playback Range: 11.688 to 19.832 6:55:31 PM p 1/3 pval = 0.875 6:55:34 PM f 1/4 pval = 0.937 6:55:38 PM p 2/5 pval = 0.812 6:55:44 PM p 3/6 pval = 0.656 6:55:50 PM p 4/7 pval = 0.5 6:55:54 PM p 5/8 pval = 0.363 I tried abr 128 (and it solves the glitch problem) too, but I failed at ABX'ing different encodes from one another. I did another test with another sample (from Infected Mushroom - B.P. Empire). The hihats seem very watery and there's some noticeable ringing (is this the right word?). What's interesting, lame_june sounds better for me than alpha 10, and I failed to ABX it from 3.96.1. Perhaps use [codebox] instead of [code]

CODE WinABX v0.42 test report 06/06/2005 22:18:02 A file: D:\Downloads\Programs\APE music\01 trumpet lame 3.97a10 --abr 128.wav B file: D:\Downloads\Programs\APE music\02 trumpet lame.june --abr 128.wav Start position 00:02.0, end position 00:10.0 22:23:00 1/1 p=50.0% 22:23:11 2/2 p=25.0% 22:23:21 3/3 p=12.5% 22:23:32 4/4 p=6.2% 22:23:49 5/5 p=3.1% 22:23:57 6/6 p=1.6% 22:24:05 7/7 p=0.8% 22:24:19 8/8 p=0.4% 22:24:27 9/9 p=0.2% 22:24:36 10/10 p< 0.1% As noted, samples tested are Trumpet at --abr 128 with lame 3.97a10 and lame june. Both samples sound very distorted but lame june is the least distorted, 3.97a10 is the worst. - The same result is obtained with cbr 128 (10/10). - The same result is obtained with abr 160 (10/10). - I was able to ABX 10/10 the original trumpet.wav against lame a97a10 --abr 190, but I am unable to ABX trumpet.wav against lame.june --abr 190, or lame a97a10 --abr 190 against lame.june --abr 190. I might try again after some rest. This post has been edited by Jechdery: Jun 6 2005, 23:49 |

the extreme preset raises the volume to high, standard preset doesn't do that....is this a bug or preconfigured behavior ?

QUOTE (NIN9 @ Jun 13 2005, 05:34 AM) the extreme preset raises the volume to high, standard preset doesn't do that....is this a bug or preconfigured behavior ? It doesn't do this with any files I've tried. The resulting dB levels are identical. Could you upload or link to any examples that exhibit this behavior? EDIT: (Portions of the original wav's, of course, not the mp3's.) Regards, Madrigal This post has been edited by Madrigal: Jun 13 2005, 14:48 |
