Copy protection on WMA files

Is there any way to take the copy protection off once files have been ripped to WMA from CD? I'm having some problems converting WMA to ALAC. Thanks

If you have a valid licence for the WMA files there's a few tools that can remove the DRM. Freeme is one such tool (Note that it is illegal in some countries to circumvent copy protection even if you are a legitimate owner of the files. Use at your own risk).

Why in earth would you want to convert from a lossy format (WMA) to a lossless format (ALAC)?  You'll only be wasting space.

[a href="http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Lossless_comparison#Windows_Media_Audio_Lossless]WMA Lossless[/url] is, as the name suggests, lossless.

I'm not that stupid! WMA lossless is what all the files are saved as! I thought that bit was common sense so I didnt mention the lossless part.

The real question is, why do you want to convert from one mediocre, proprietary format to another mediocre, proprietary format?

You should consider encoding to FLAC, Monkey's Audio, etc. before WMAL and ALAC.

Isn't the whole point of this topic to solve his copy protection problem rather than some codec wars?

I used Freeme however it said it couldnt remove protection because the files were encoded in DRM version 1 and it only encodes version 2?? Any ideas here?

In the US, it is probably illegal to even discuss how to circumvent copy protection.  Becauase of that, TOS 9 explicitly prohibits any discussion of how to circumvent copy protection.  You guys need to take this discussion private.

There isn't a law to burn to cd, and copy to anther format is there?? Feasible, if there aren't many files.

1. Im not in the US

2. I have paid my hard earned money to purchase the origional CDs. Now WMA limits how and where  I store all my music, pardon me but I would like the flexibility to work in applications outside of Windows. I dont believe in this instance that prohibiting me from doing so is fair. Hence my origional question.

TOS 9 is not limited to those in the US.

Changing it so that WMA doesn't limit your files at all requires precisely one step.  Go to tools, options, and under the "rip music" tab, make sure that "copy protect music" is unchecked.  Then rerip your cds and they will not be copy protected and your problem is solved.

But the forum is, and you don't want to cause any trouble for the persons in charge, do you?

It's not illegal to discuss copy protection circumvention, and the mods didn't seem to have a problem with the large thread on using tools to extract DVD-Audio (which was definitely a copy protection circumvention as it patched WinDVD to send data to disk instead of the sound card). I'm sure I could find countless other examples if I tried a quick search.

If the moderators have a problem with the content they can take appropriate action and I won't mention it again.
