EAC Killed My CD/DVD Drive!

Well, I'm not 100% sure the software is to blame, but my laptop is just 6 months old and everything was OK until I started ripping with EAC. Yesterday I downloaded the software and made a test ripping and encoding a couple of tracks. Today I ripped four albums in a row, and after inserted the fifth one, my computer doesn't want to read CD's (and DVD's of course). Is the application is too demanding that it can actually damage the burner? Does anyone know?

Do other CDs still play? It might be that the fifth CD is a data CD and if might have installed some software to prevent ripping if you have autoplay enabled. Try inserting the CD while holding down the 'shift' key and see if it works.

maybe its one of those "put in your drive to access more features crap" I've had some issues with rippers reading those

Did it take an exceptionally long time to rip one of the cd's?

Is one of the cd's releatively new, or an EMI release?

CD ripping using EAC is a very intensive process making your drive read and re-read lots of data continuously for an extended period of time. Hence, the drive will die faster as compared to normal usage. I have had a drive die on me after I ripped about a hundred CDs in one go. I bought a new relatively inexpensive drive for that very purpose and I was pretty sure that the drive would die more or less when I was done ripping my CDs. That is exactly what happened.

However, your drive seemed to have died very quickly. I suspect bad hardware (and bad luck). I have heard of drives being killed by copy protected CDs but those were a long time ago and AFAIK, it was on iMacs-not PCs. Hence, I am not sure if copy protection is to be blamed for this. Also, I have noticed that laptop drives are usually not as robust as the desktop ones. I have observed higher failure rates in laptop-but that is only my opinion. You may try to get your laptop company to replace your drive. Just don't tell them you tried to rip audio CD. Tell them it died all of a sudden without any warning. They will replace it for you.

I know EAC can be stressing to drives when using paranoid mode but I can't vouch for the impact of any other mode.

As has already been said, there may have been some kind of software installed by one of the CDs or your drive may just have kicked the bucket.

Well, I used secure mode to do the ripping. I tried with different types of discs (original DVD's, Data CD's and original audio CD's), and none of them can be read. The audio CD's I ripped were the first four Boston's albums. I don't think copy protection is to blame since they are kinda old.

P.S. I'm pretty sure my warranty will cover the replacement. Just in case, can anyone recomend me a a good CD/DVD +- RW DL External drive?

I have an NEC-ND3540A. I love it. It is affordable (about $45 on NewEgg.com) and it perfprms well. To be honest, I haven't done any PI/PO scans to verify the burn quality myself. From what I have heard, some of the ND3540A drives are good and some are bad. There is no way to distinguish the good ones from the bad ones. However, if you get a good one, you will absoutely love it.

Did anyone actually read his post? He's saying after he ripped the 5th one, now his computer won't read any CD's or DVD's at all. Anyway I'd say it's just coincidence, lucky it died at the 6th month mark rather than after the warranty expiry period at least...

Yeah. Lucky me, but I'm still thinking about getting an EXTERNAL DVD +- RW. Can anyone recomend me a cheap Burner to share the load? Or, maybe recommend me a good EXTERNAL Burner that can take a seriuos beating. To be graphic, I will abuse that baby so badly that neighbors are gonna call child services. So submit your cheap or tough drives suggestions...

PS Are these brands any good? Fantom, LG, Lite On or I/O magic? These are the cheapest ones I've found...

Fantom and I/O Magic are just rebrands. My preference is for BenQ, LG or NEC.
