Is there a reason silence isn't lower than 32? I know it probably won't make that much difference to a file to have it on the lowest possible bitrate unless theres a hidden track after 15 mins of silence.
Is there some hardware player compatability issues with extremely low bitrates or something? DAP's are not something I have, or will probably have so I'm not too worried about doing it. Would the -b 8 switch work if it's preceeded by a lame preset or does that preset override anything else? |

For sampling rates of 32 kHz and higher the minimum bitrate defined by the mp3 spec is 32 kbps.

QUOTE (stephanV @ Jan 3 2006, 02:28 PM) It is possible to encode at lower bitrates with the lame --freeformat option, but only when using cbr. All software players I tried decode this correctly (Sounds awful of course, but for digital silence it would be very useful). So, I'd really like that switch to work with vbr, like "-V6 --freeformat -b8". |

I think freeformat can only be CBR, otherwise it would be too difficult to figure out the frame size.
